Hi All,

I have just been changed to NovoPen Echo as my previous pen has been discontinued! Since changing I have had Hypo after Hypo both day & night! I have reduced my units but still having the Hypos! Has anyone else been changed to this pen & found thisor isit just me?

I have 2 and love them.

Perhaps your old pen was faulty and not dispensing enough insulin, you your ratios were higher than really needed, so the new pen in giving the "correct" dose and so you need to rework your ratios?
Or the new pen could be the faulty one?

My Echo pen is fine. The pen could be faulty but seems unlikely. Were the previous cartridges out of date of been badly stored so they didn't work properly but the new one is OK?

In the instructions that come with Novopens there are.details of a test which involves removing the inner needle cover and attaching the outer cover. Hold the pen upside down and inject 20 units into the cover. It should exactly fill the tapered section. If it doesn't then the pen is faulty. I think there is a diagram to shoe the line the insulin should come to. Worth doing on any pen periodically just to check for accuracy.

I live in Ireland and I have contacted Novonordisk a few times inquiring about getting the Echo pen but they were never available here. After reading in this thread that the Novopen 4 has been discontinued I rang again this morning and they are here at last HURRAY!!! I have ordered 2 and should have them in 5 working days:). I am beyond delighted. The woman I spoke to.asked why I wanted the.Echo and I explained that my main reason was for.the half units, no problem with this but she said (very nicely) that she was reluctant to give them to people who only wanted the memory function because of a fear of patients underdosing by only counting clicks and not checking the dose visually. Has anyone else had this issue raised?

No, I asked for the pen for bolus first, and then basal, and I was given both no issue. But then I do use tiny amounts of insulin at a time! My pens are on my repeat prescription now at my DSNs request

Half units give more flexibility in dosing and so greater control. I think everyone should have one!

I think it's 5 units fill to the line, but it's given in the instructions as you say.

I've checked mine and they were both fine.

Possible over aged or warm insulin?

To clarify, the inner needle caps have a line near the bottom - that's where I think the 5 units is to.

It may be 20 for the tapered section, but that's a whole day's Basal + Bolus for me and seems such a waste

Just one day? That's 2 days for me, sometimes more ;)

I throw out a lot of insulin because the cartridge has been in ise for the 30 days

Hi Hale. You can download the Penfill instructions from the web. Google it or I think they are on the Novodisk website. I usually stretch my Rapid cartridges to 35 days with no apparent loss of power. Novo have to spec them for all countries and some would be used in a very hot climate. I suspect in the UK in an average temp you could stretch them quite a way but for me 35 is enough.

Unless your previous pen was faulty and dosing insufficient insulin then I can't see how this would be, if in doubt change the Echo Pen or contact the Novo Nordisk helpline and ask for advice, I've used the Echo pen for a while now and not had any problems, I wonder if your hypo's are just a coincidence with you changing pens.
