Novorapid??

I've been prescribed novorapid to use on the days I'm unwell, but right now I'm really craving chocolate but my sugars are too high can I inject some novorapid to bring them down so I can have some chocolate or is this silly??

Hi what other insulins are u on? do you know your carb to insulin ratio?
 
i wouldn't risk it then as u wont know how much to inject
 
So what are you meant to inject qty wise when you are ill? Have you been given guidelines for this?

That is dreadful. So is this when your levels go over a certain blood reading? A lot of people base it on 1 unit will bring you down 3mml.. But you could be any ratio for correcting highs....
How high do you ho when you are ill? And how often are you ill?

Adding NovoRapid when you are on a mixed insulin seems very unusual. You might be better on a Basal/Bolus regime if you are using two insulins. You would then carb-count easily with a Basal/Bolus and it would be easier to take extra Rapid if ill by taking a predictable correction dose. I would suggest Basal/Bolus to your GP? BTW I have chocolate but only the 85% variety. Avoid popular milky brands like the plague.
 
As Diabell says, ask your Dr to change you over to basal/bolus, there's much more flexibility on this insulin regime and correcting high bg levels is so much easier, it might be that you'll need to change over to the hospital diabetes team to advise you on basal/bolus but that shouldn't be a problem.
 
On novomix 30 which is biphasic twice daily there is no need to calculate an insulin to carb ratio or a correction factor for high bg levels. Carb does need to be counted but kept to eating specific amounts at different times of the day to stabilise the action of the insulin dose. When ill and not feeling able to eat food, then a small amount of the insulin needs to be injected and careful monitoring of bg levels needs to be done along with eating or drinking very small amounts of carb.
