Hi, I'm looking for some suggestions to substitute the various Nut, Coconut and Almond ingredients in the Low Carb Budget Meal Plan as I am allergic to some of these and have an intolerance to others which results in bad migraines. I'm not diabetic, but have been using lower carb recipes to lose weight, reduce high cholesterol and generally eat better. As there are quite a lot of people with a Peanut allergy, I find it a bit frustrating that there are never any alternatives given for recipes that include Peanut Butter - has anyone got any suggestions please?

Other than peanut butter there's cashew and almond butter. Hope this helps.

Lupin flour, hemp flour are a couple of non nut options for flour and there are others. Tahini could be a substitute for peanut butter. Soy butters.

I was looking for an alternative to all Nut butters, as I'm allergic to nuts. I also have an issue with Almonds, even though I've been told that they are not a nut. I can't eat a almonds, coconut and a few other things as they give me really bad migraines.

Thanks, had not heard of hemp or lupin flour - though I can probably use normal flour in recipes as I'm not diabetic and am okay with it . I can't have Soy products either. Will have a look at tahini and see what is in it. Thank you!

You could use Besan flour also made from chickpeas. It is a bit higher carb though.

I wouldn't call Bean flour low carb:

The following nutrition information is provided by the USDA for 1 cup (92g) of chickpea flour.1
  • Calories: 356
  • Fat: 6g
  • Sodium: 59mg
  • Carbohydrates: 53g
  • Fiber: 10g
  • Sugars: 10g
  • Protein: 21g
Wheat flour is about 73g / 100g.

I think you have been misinformed about Almonds. The 2 common 'non-nuts' I know of are peanuts (I have seen the plants at the Eden project - the flower 'dives' underground after i's fertilised - fascinating), the other one is cashews which are also very strange in that the 'nut' grows below the fruit.

I do wish we would call things what they are rathe than what they look like so: oilseed legume (instead of peanut or groundnut) and Orca (rather than 'killer whale' - which of course should be 'whale killer' since they are a dolphin and they do).

Orcas kill porpoises as well. When a friend & I visited Stomness we were told the porpoises moved into very shallow water if Orcas were around.

There’s an article on our own website at DCUK on lower carb flours, I can’t comment on any of them as I’ve never used them but it may give you some ideas, some will be higher in carbs than others

Sunflower butter - never used it but had a little search and it’s about 4.5g carb a tablespoon - don’t know if that would fit into your low carb plan

Oh, I'm sorry. If you have all nut allergies then the other substitutes would be Granola butter, Soy nut butter, Sunflower seed butter, Tahini. I'm not sure if they are available in your country or whether you may need to order them online. Other than that i honestly wouldn't know. Sorry

I sometimes use ground linseed, it is heartier and browner than almond flour, but works in some recipes. I use the 90 second bread recipe with it and make a cheesy vegetable microwave omelette with it (2 eggs, 34 g ground linseed, 28 g olive oil, veg of choice, cheese of choice, stir everything and microwave for 2 minutes, add butter). I have also used it for some breads, especially if I want a darker, more Nordic style bread.
