Hi, I've been eating weetabix for breakfast now and again but occasionally I get IBS and weetabix doesn't go down too well at times. My doctor said I should try Oatabix... which I did and absolutely love but these sent my BG to 8.6 after an hour..... Is this okay? :?:

The total after food should be no higher then 8.5 and this is testing 2 hours after eating you will need to test 2 hours after eating. From reading on this forum it has been said that some foods also need to test 3 hours after eating i.e if you eat pasta spag or rice as these carbs are slow releasing so you may need to also test 3 hours later - thats 2 hours after eating then an hour later to be on the safe side. I have spag bol now and again but keep the portion smaller to what I ued to eat and my BS is okay (7.2) but this may not be the case with everyone as we are all different.

Have you tried porridge some people can eat it some can't. I can and make it with water then add a little milk to cool it or you can add fruit to it or even yogurt (a small amount) if you want but will need to test 2 hours after to see how your reacting to it.

Good luck I find breakfast the hardest thing to sort and am glad that porridge doesn't react on me.
Sue :)

Never tried Oatabix and very unlikely I will. You could try a smaller portion size which should reduce you 1 hour bg to 7 and below, so 10g less in weight could be a start to see if this helps. Oats are both delicious and nutritious, but it's best to avoid the highly processed refined oats and try and stick with the Rough Scottish Oats, they are bigger in size and take longer to digest and don't cause the spikes in bg that the refined oat cereals do.
