Hi All,
Since I reported on here a couple of weeks ago about my now improving life quality and BG levels, I have noticed something about my BG testing that I haven't see mentioned here before. I am therefore unsure if this is as a result of the recent changes I have seen or something else going on. I'd be grateful to hear your thoughts...
When I test now, I get much more blood than I used to, without any changes to the depth I have set for the needle puncture. I will be cutting back on the dial to see if that reduces it, but I was wondering why this has happened. My own take on it results from my first awareness of my (then undiagnosed) diabetes when I was in Russia. I had collapsed in my office, following feeling very disorientated and unable to see clearly. The hospital could find nothing wrong with me, apart from the fact that my blood was like 'treacle', with a BG level of around 15 (and this was after I had been on a drip for a few hours and given blood thinners for a suspected heart attack). Back home I was diagnosed Type 2, and have only now managed to control this. Based on the above experience, I am assuming that now with my BG levels constantly being managed around 5.4 - 5.8 the blood must be a lot thinner, with a consequent freer flow when I test. I have to keep a tissue on my finger for up to 15 minutes now in order to stem the blood flow, whem normally with one wipe it had stopped.
Am I correct, or is there something else going on here?

Are you taking aspirin? It does have that effect.

hi colin i have noticed that it is a lot easier to get the blood out now.i remember at the start (march 09)how hard it was.i was on the highest setting and i had to squeeze it out.now it comes out on its own.it still does stop just as easily as it used to.now i tend to use the same four fingers so maybe that has somthing to do with it.

Hi Colin,

Yes, I noticed the same difference from when I started testing to the present. I wondered just the same as you whether it was related to the blood being thinner - i.e. less viscous. However, I've never read anything about it. It must be a possibility.
 
I've noticed similar things over 7 weeks – not 15 mins or anything like that, but just that it doesn't always stop with one blot. I have put it down to puncturing my fingers too much – maybe the hole opens up more easily?? I do try to vary it but logic says we must sometimes hit the same spot as before.

Definitely need an answer from a long-termer. Cos otherwise we'll all imagine we're going to end up with non-healing fingers!

From my own personal experience I'd say that lower BG=thinner blood. Kinda obvious, really. I've had blood shoot out and go 1ft in the air if I prick myself then squeeze when my sugar is low..!

(Bit of a shock first time that happened, I can tell you!)

I am happy that I am on the right track with my thoughts here, so will stop worrying about it.
I do still take aspirin (even after the negative reports on it last week), mainly cos most of my ancestors have been somewhat experts in how to die young from a heart attack, and that coupled with being born in the Glasgow area, doesn't give me high hopes for long term survival. Anything that may be suggested as being remotely good for the heart goes straight down my throat :lol:

I see that you take Aspirin.....that is a blood thinning agent. How much do you take ?
 
I take 75mg soluble aspirin daily (in the evenings). I have been taking this for over 6 years now (pre-diabetes diagnosis) without problems. It is only since my BG levels have dropped drastically that I have the increased blood flow.
On top of that I take 5 grammes Testogel (I think equivalent to 50 mg Testosterone), 2 x 500 mg Metformin, 8mg Perindopril and 10 mg Losec (Omeprazole). I am also prescirbed Simvastatin 40 mg daily, but have yet to start taking it (worried about effects on my liver, so will wait until my liver enzyme readings are lower before considering that).
