Oh Dear

@Motherhen2014
As a type 2 it is good to keep carbs down but I'm sure you already know this. If you want to lose weight you will also need to keep the total daily kilojoules underneath your daily requirement from all food sources. If you simply replace the carbs with something from somewhere else with the same kj then sorry, you will not lose weight.

For example, when diagnosed I was 106kg. According to my BMI, age, sex and activity I require 12000 kj per day of energy. 1kg of fat contains 36000 kj of energy. If I reduce my daily intake to 11000 kj I will lose 1 kg in 36 days. I altered my intake to 8500 kj per day and am now 94 kg. This has taken several months with Xmas in the way. You will need to find out exactly how many kj you eat per day from all foods. Then you need to work out how much you need. Set a target for what you want to lose and a time period. Adjust your kj intake accordingly. Then you can adjust your carbs / fats / protein ratios as needed according to your type 2 condition but stay within the kj target.

I know it sounds hard. It is at first but you will be surprised how quickly you can get used to it. I wouldn't be surprised if there is even the tools on this web resource to do all of this or similar.

Hope you find what works soon but the above worked a treat for me.

Hi friends after my daughter telling me to give it another try I actually lost 4lb so very happy
I am hooked on cauliflower mash now with meat and green vegetables.Cant get down to 20 carbs yet but am down to 70 a day.I will get there.

You need to eat fewer calories than your BMR requires in order to lose weight. You can look this up on a calculator if you put BMR calculator into Google. Lowering carbs helps your BG levels rather than your weight. Your weight may not change at all if you make up the missing carbs with calories from fats and protein.

Now I am totally confused!! Low Card only gives me lower BG and I am told on here eat good fat don't take skin off chicken. So as I want to lose weight what you are now saying is it cannot be done on low carb as my weight is paramount as well as BG why am I doing low carb.I just feel totally confused now......

I know about Calories and portion size but if low carb can't help me with weight why am I doing it.

Of course it can be done on low carb. You just need to be careful you don't overdo the fats. Eat the fats, but not massive portions! Just enough to fill you up so you aren't hungry. It is a fine balancing act, but using your glucose meter and your bathroom scales you will find that balance.

@Motherhen2014

Less than a day ago you posted that you had lost 4 pounds and were pleased with what you were eating.
So keep doing whatever you were doing and don't worry about it.

Don't let yourself get distracted or confused by people telling you different things. They are all advising on what they think works for them.

If you have lost 4pounds then you may have found what works for you. Keep doing it unless it stops working. At which point, you may need to have a rethink. But for the moment, just stick to your winning combo and don't stress the numbers, or the detail, or the jargon.

Oh, and well done. Am pleased for you. 4 pounds is a great result in a week.

Bluetit thank you for your reply, I am eating lots of upperground vegetables and doing cauliflower puree and low carb crackers.I have z chocolate flavoured nut bar for breakfast nothing else and no bread no potatoes I count up all my carbs as I keep a meal book to keep eye on what I am am eating. I JUST cannot get down to 20 carbs the smallest I do is 70 and hope to get it down more as I go along.zi am sorry for the rant...xx

Thank you so much x

There is no compulsion to get down to 20g carbs. I choose to, but that is a choice. If you’ve started losing weight on what you’ve been eating, then as others have said, just carry on with that. Your food needs to work for you and you need to enjoy it if your way of eating is to be sustainable.

Well done on the weight loss.

I absolutely agree. There is no need at all to get down to 20g carbs. That is an extreme amount. You say you are managing 70g and that is fine and an awful lot less than you would have been eating before you started. So well done! Trying to reach 20g is probably doing nothing but stressing you, and stress won't help anything. Keep going, and if you stop losing think about reducing something like a few nuts or a bit of cheese. Nothing drastic.

I was ready to throw the towel in.

I know exactly how you feel. Sticking to the rules and not seeing the expected results is very depressing, I've been doing that for years. My GP says my metabolism is broken . . . . .and offers no advice on how to cure it. Throwing the towel in doesn't solve anything, probably makes things worse.

My present experience with a VLDC is annoying as far as weight loss is concerned, started well, lost a stone, now plateaued for 3 weeks, going to see if fasting can "jog" things a bit. I haven't jacked it in yet, I want to lose the weight. The one thing it has shown is that it's very easy to gain weight even when eating less than RMR, never mind BMR.

The formula used by a lot of diet organisations is based on the Harris Benedict formula which has been around for over 100 years. It assumes metabolism is a fixed known constant which might be true for most people but not for me, not by a long chalk.

Keep up the good work.

Sounds like you are doing everything right and are loosing weight with better blood sugars... what's the problem? Don't overthink things too much.

I was told years ago I have a very slow metabolism.I am keeping going and have a wonderful book Carbs and Calorie counter gives me pictures of foods and bps me keep hold of my calories and carbs.Thank you for your message.
