I was so disappointed this morning I have out on another 4Ib I so want this to work.
I spoke to my daughter as I was ready to throw the towel in.But I said to her I feel better than I have felt for a long while a d my readings are down
She has said to give it another go but concentrate on meal size, as well as calories. So I am going to give it another month. One point I need to clarify do I have to keep to 20 gsm carbs daily or can I lose weight on a higher carb count but not too much more.

No one can tell you how low your carbs need to be to lose weight, it also depends on not having too much protein. Nearly everyone can lose weight if they truly keep their carbs to under 30g a day, but some people need to count all carbs including whats in milk etc. Other people with Type2 only need to cut their carbs to under about 150g per day provided the calories are reasonable.

Most people find that BG control improves on a low carb diet before they start losing weight, and it is high BG (and/or the drugs used to control it) that kills us, not our weight.

Well I lost weight while keeping carbs between 50 to 80 grams per day some times a little higher some times slightly less I also counted calories but as has been said on here often what works for one does not always work for all you just have to find out by trial and error.

Hi @Motherhen2014 you have a very wise daughter! And well done for sticking at it. Getting your sugars down is the most important thing and if you’re also feeling well, that’s another good sign.

Plenty of people lose weight on more than 20g of carbs a day - just use your meter to see which foods you can deal with.

It’s surprising that you’re gaining weight on 20g carbs a day. It might be worth posting a couple of daily menus - people on here might be able to help you tweak things/spot something you haven’t noticed.

Thank you for your reply.I am finding hard to keep to 20grms a day I should have explained better.I keep off potatoes as they send my readings sky high.My daughter thinks I should watch how much I am eating and monitor what I fry.So I am giving it another try.
Many Thanks again.

Keep going
What you are doing is a total positive life style change.
My doc once said "do i want to look good out in public or on the scales"
With this i hit the weights as it tones and gets your heart rate up.

You have mentioned potatoes but are you cutting down/out on all the other carbohydrates such as pasta, rice and breads or anything made with flour? It takes a while to get down to 20g of carbs per day. Most people start off higher (130g or below per day is considered low carb) and slowly reduce that figure to a number they feel comfortable with and which keeps blood glucose to a better level.
There are a lot of hidden carbs that we can sometimes come a cropper on such as those in pasta sauces or preprepared foods.

It took me about 5 stunned seconds after diagnosis to decide to go zero carb for the following 36 hours.
As a long time low carber I have to confess that I deliberately maintained my weight just so as to see the expression on the faces of the diabetes education team who were so adamant that losing weight and eating baked potato and beans was the way to go - but I am becoming a very wicked old woman. It is the way people talk as though I'm slow witted which gets my back up.

It is possible to lose weight on a low or high carb diet. If you are happy with what you are currently doing, then continue. Losing weight takes a long time and can be discouraging at points, but if you put in the effort you will succeed in the end. Good luck!

I think it is difficult to loose weight on a high carb diet if you have insulin resistance. By high carb I mean the government guidelines of 280g or higher. My experience with insulin resistance is I cannot loose weight unless my blood glucose is in good range 4-7 most of the time.

Sorry to have to say this but with potatoes and bread I cannot see how you are getting a number of 20g per day, sweet potatoes are as carby as white ones and if you bake sweet potatoes they are even worse. The average slice of white bread is 15/20 carbs and wholemeal is as heavy. Even low carb breads are between 8 and 11 carbs per slice.
Do you have the Carbs and Cals book or app? It is a great tool or you can just google 'How many carbs in xxxx'.

To add to what @Guzzler said, I would say that carrots and onions can also be carby so care needs to be taken - and what do you use to thicken your stews and for the gravy?

I did get a low carb gravy granules but can't stand them, so I use Quick from works not sure how I would get onion flavor without onions.

I have to apologise @Motherhen2014 I should have reread your OP today, I misremembered and thought you said you were on 20g carbs per day. Sorry about that but I will say again that under 130g carbs per day is considered low carb and it is imo a good place to start. You can then lower that number until you reach a point that you are comfortable with and that shows better bg levels. Good luck.

Thank you no apology necessary Guzzler.
