Oh so that’s what it was....(B12 deficiency)

Well ... for the best part of a year I’ve had recurring bouts of shortness of breath, dizziness, palpitations, sudden major fatigue – these often came post-hypo, but increasingly they have happened when my blood sugars are OK. Finally finally, a consultant puzzled by my nerve conduction problems suggests I have a vitamin B12 test and of course they immediately find my levels are very low (75 ng/l) and probably have been for ages. It’s nice to have it identified, but as soon as I thought to look for it on the internet it is such a bleeding obvious diagnosis if you already have auto-immune problems that I wonder what on earth all the GPs and consultants have been thinking all this time.
As far as I can make out my levels are pretty low, but I’m slightly surprised that my GP has just put me on weekly shots for 4 weeks, whereas internet articles suggest every 2-3 days for 6 weeks. Given I’ve been feeling rubbish for so long it would be nice to bounce back quicker. Has anyone out there had a similar experience? Should I be prodding my GP to up the frequency of injections? (I don’t want to wind him up unnecessarily – I get so annoyed when my students try to quote internet sites against what I’ve said!)

It can't hurt to see how you are after four weeks, and four injections. Your doctor will probably repeat the treatment if you respond well to it, and if you ask for more of the same. In a forceful sort of way :)
