Hi all
This is my first post though I have lurked for a while...
I am type 2, on metformin twice daily, have had a few wobbles while I messed up the types of cereal I was eating...how does Special k sell itself as so good for you?!
But I am badly missing sweeties and chocolate and cakes (I love baking).
So what can I eat instead???!
Thanks in advance.

You can get "no added sugar" chocolates, and some of them taste really good (the Cavalier ones for example) but they all tend to give you the runs....
In fact, really good quality dark chocolate, the 70% cocoa solids stuff, hasn't got an awful lot of sugar in anyway, so I treat myself to one square of that occasionally (at the moment Lindt dark chocolate with Chilli - mmmm!). Portion control is the problem!
Incidentally, if you like chocolate mousse, they had some recipes in the Guardian today, a couple of which had no sugar in (apart from what is in the chocolate already). I might give those a go myself.

As for cakes, I made a chocolate cake using Da Vinci sugar free syrup and ground almonds as flour for my birthday and it worked really well. I also made Baklavas with the Da Vinci syrup and although they weren't quite as sticky as the real thing, they were really popular! So, don't give up hope, experiment with the sweeteners!

Thankyou Brill, that choc and chilli sounds v interesting! And the choc mousse recipe, I will look it up. I can manage for most of the time, with a yog or fruit, but I blame the time of the month for my serious cravings!!

Hi, welcome to the forum!
Recently discovered a gr8 wheat free choc cake recipe, no flour, cocoa & dark choc & I use splenda instead of sugar-its gorgeous!!. I put the mixture in small fairy cake cases, so I can treat myself now & then & not feel too guilty! Fairly low carb but got to watch that fat content though. :(
120g dark chocolate
120g butter
8 tablesoons Splenda (instead of sugar)
80g cocoa powder
3 eggs, beaten
1 teaspoon vanilla extract (tastes ok without it)

melt the choc & butter, stir in the cocoa, splenda, add the beaten eggs last (off heat so they don't scamble) 10-15 mins in oven-yummy!
Jus :D

melt 1 square of 90% cocoa choc for about 20 secs in micro dip in strawberries or raspberries .Eat with cream or creme fraise.

i use the dark chocolate aswell but............ lately when im between meals and snacks sometime i run a bit low i have one of those cadburys eclair sweets. only 5g of carb per sweet so just 1 when im running low is enough to get me to my next snack or meal. easy to carry in your bag and you dont feel left out. one of my mates caught me eating one and said i thought your diabetic, my answer when i explained about the carbs and fat in the sweet and how it was absorbed and how many carbs and sugar was in his ginger beer he was drinking confirmed to him that i was diabetic

When I was working, I used to get the lads to give me their Mars bar wrappers to sniff, it would satisfy some of the choccie craving until I could make a small cup of cocoa with sweeteners, I also had an old drinking choc tin to sniff. How sad?
