Type 2 Ok to cut metformin xr pill in half?

From research and past convos I see that the XR formulation should *not* be cut in half - the reason being it essentially will dissolve faster and not as per the XR spec. I don’t see how this really matters. If you are in XR because of gastro tolerance issues then yes I can see cutting the pill can reintroduce this. This is not an issue for me. If I have no gastro issues with standard then why would cutting the XR be a problem?
 
The problem with cutting any MR /XL medication in half means the dose is not evenly distributed over the 12 hours. So you have too much / or not enough. Depending on the medication it also depends which part of the GI tract it dissolves in and like you said the rate of absorption.
 
We are not allowed to recommend changes to meds. Always best to take meds as prescribed, @elGato007 . Though perhaps ask your doctor if you really need to have the XR version if you can tolerate the standard Metformin?
