I went out for a snack lunch with my daughter and grandson today, to a place we go quite often. I had my usual tuna mayo and red onion sandwich, (2 slices of granary bread). I tested 2 hours after expecting it to be high, maybe even 9's. OMG it was 12.1. I was so taken aback I tested again in a different finger. Same result. It was still 11.4 after 2 and a half hours. I can cope with one slice of Hovis granary quite easily. This wasn't Hovis, it was a lighter brown in colour and didn't seem to have as many seeds in it, although advertised on the menu as granary. I am also now wondering what sort of mayo they use. The menu didn't specify light mayo, although I know all their milk is semi skimmed for tea and coffees and doesn't say so anywhere. I shall not be having that again. Strangely enough I didn't feel ill at all. I have never had a reading like that, and it has ******** up my averages! We live and learn.

Hi there
I got caught out last week when I went to lunch with my sister in law. Smoked salmon, 3,very, very small slices of a brown granary bread, not one I recognised, 2 new potatoes and my BGs two hours later were almost 12. Weekly averages were also nothing to shout about so I won't be having that bread again.

Yes. It has stunned me to discover how extreme my reaction is to bread.

You look at a slice of bread and cannot believe the effect it will have. And I don't have much difference between white, brown, granary or speciality breads. My reaction also seems to be directly proportional to how much bread I have been eating in the previous days and weeks, almost as if I build up an immunity by regular exposure. I'm beginning to wonder if I have become wheat intolerant, but don't even know if that would have an impact on BG?

Strange you didn't feel ill. This is why the docs are so wrong to tell us to eat bread and not to test....grrr.

The best advice I can offer is don't eat bread whatever it is called. Or, eat bread and don't be surprised by high readings. Most of us can't eat bread and get away with it and ....................join the club.

For me it appears to be any bread, even Vogel and Burgen. I mean how do I have a bacon Sarnie for heavens sake. Lol

But I can eat bread as part of a meal - one slice only and it has to be Hovis granary. I knew 2 slices would spike me but not to that frightening extent especially eaten with a tuna-mayo filling. I have been eating this probably once a month without knowing how bad it was, along with a lot of other things no doubt because I was only given my monitor 3 weeks ago. I shall certainly be telling my nurse next time I see her.

I had a 9.2 earlier today an hour after lunch which came as a surprise. I'd eaten a gooseberry fool, but a different brand to the one I usually have. It appeared to have no more carbs than the one I normally buy so I thought it would be okay. I won't be buying that brand again. And yes I know fruit fools are relatively high in sugar but they normally have a very limited impact on my BG levels.

Have a bacon sarny and enjoy it. Just don't complain when It gives you high sugar readings. You should expect them

For me it's rice. Breads bad but rice is awful. As is pasta. I can manage knäckebröd which is à kind of Swedish crispbread. Don't care for potatoes unless they are crisps or chips! Half a piece of fudge cake raises my bs marginally (this is a very occasional treat as I generally avoid all cakes and biscuits). There's no understanding diabetes, is there?
