Most renal calculi (stones) are calcium oxalate, and can actually be seen on a plain old Xray of the abdomen. As opposed to gallbladder stones which can't, they have to be seen on an ultrasound "scan". Kidney stones can definitely cause blood in the urine because they scrape up the urethra (tube connects kidney to bladder) which is where they usually live.
