If gliclazide is giving you low sugar levels, the dose should probably be reduced or you should be taken off the dose if already on the lowest dose.

Eating simply to raise sugar levels is going to make you put on weight. This is precisely why gliclazide is strongly linked with weight gain.

My own view is that gliclazide is not a good drug for most people with type 2 diabetes as it makes your condition harder to deal with.

Type 2 diabetes is a problem in which you're producing more insulin than normal and this is what is causing the insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. Gliclazide pushes your pancreas to release even more insulin, hence it makes the insulin resistance problem worse.

Gliclazide does one thing well, it lowers blood sugar levels -however, the cost of it is that it makes type 2 diabetes develop into a worse condition.

If at all you can, you want to aim, with your doctor's support for help with coming off the gliclazide and onto managing your diabetes with either diet and metformin or diet alone.

This is possible. A number of people on the diabetes forum have managed to come off drugs like gliclazide (this group of drugs are called sulphonylureas) and are managing their diabetes through diet rather than medications.

I hope this helps with understanding how these drugs work and why you need to consider whether they're right for you.
