I visited my doctor last Thursday, for my diabetic review. While I was there, I had my flu shot, and discussed some blood test results. My gp was pleased as my hbac came back on 49, and everything seemed normal. I had my flu shot, and discussed some blood work that I had done. one of the tests, was to check to see whether I was going through the perimenopause. I have missed a couple of periods, and wanted to see if this was why. Nothing showed up on the results, but my doctor said this is normal at my age (48).

Since then I have been having high readings in the afternoon, I am wondering if the flu shot, or the perimenopause is too blame? I have also noticed that I am quite thirsty at night, my readings seem quite stable in the morning, but will creep up to 15.4 two hours later. I am a type one on a insulin pump, so am very careful about carb counting. I also have a terrible meter that my gp gave me, as the test strips are cheaper. It is awful, and will quite often give me three different results. I don't trust it at all. I have an appointment next Wednesday to see my consultant, but just wondering if anyone could offer some advice. Feeling very fed up at the moment, any support will be much appreciated.

Can't help much on the Type 1 side of things, but you sound as if you need cheering up!

A flu jab can upset your BG readings, but they should return to normal after a few days. I believe that approaching the menopause can also affect your BG readings. Getting worried about things can affect them as well

I hope your consultant can help and give you some reassurance. Meanwhile, watch those carbs and try to keep positive.

Sod the cost get a decent meter when you see your consultant!! they shouldnt have changed your meter due to 'cost cutting' in the first place

Hi, If you need a new blood testing meter try Gluocmen, you can call them on 0800 243 667 or look for them online, they send out metersand all the accessories to go with them and even the batteries all for free within a couple of days, they are great meters, my husband has 2, one for work and one for home, very easy to use and reliable. +1 for Glucomen.

The LX+ was the first to land on my doormat and I liked from the beginning. I liked the lancer which is easy to use and the needles are cheap. I bought a pack of strips and a packet of lancets from E Bay and although they were cheaper than RRP it isn't something I could carry on doing indefinitely. Luckily at my first DN visit she gave me a prescription for both.

I tried 3 different monitors and the Glucomen won by a mile for me....

Their customer service is excellent and everytime I have rung I have been pleased at the level of service.

The monitor is free. You just have top see of your doctor will give you a prescription. If not the codefree from E Bay is a good reliable machine and the strips and lancets are pretty cheap.

Use the drop down boxes on the listing for the number of strips and/or lancets you require and you will see that they are pretty well priced.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Feeling better today, spoke to my diabetic nurse at the hospital, and she suggested I change some of my basal rates for the afternoon. It worked like a dream, was back to normal readings again, don't know if this will continue, but she wants to see how it goes over the next few days. I definitely seem to need more insulin at the moment.
Regarding my meter, I am going to get it changed, they told me at the hospital, the one I had was one of the worse for reliability. They are going to give me a more accurate one, and write to my gp saying I need the test strips on prescription.
My hospital team are so much better than my doctor's surgery, they are more with it, and will always ring you back if you have a problem.
Thanks for all the advice, much appreciated......
