One week wonder

10 years ago, I started out with high triglyceride (typical for many South Asians). Back then, I didn't know it was a symptom of insulin resistance. Even though I controlled my already decent diet, added some exercise (and some statins for triglyceride), five years ago, I was diagnosed diabetic [with Fasting Sugar of 150(8.3) and PP 250(13.8)]. With some research, I too up nutrition therapy and brought down the FS 120 (6.7) and PP round about 150 (8.3).

Then, I stumbled onto Newcastle diet through a news paper article and decided to give their 800C diet a try (particularly because I was off my nutrition therapy for a few months now). Before starting the diet, my BMI was 24 and I had already been under nutrition therapy for a long time. Plus, my diet was reasonably decent too. So, I approached Newcastle diet with a bit of skepticism. But here are my Fasting Sugar levels:

Before starting the diet: 134 (7.4)
01d after dieting: 116 (6.4)
02d after dieting: 117 (6.4)
03d after dieting: 117 (6.4)
04d after dieting: 114 (6.3)
-----------------------NON-DIABETIC-LEVELS
05d after dieting: 102 (5.7)
06d after dieting: 95 (5.3)
07d after dieting: 94 (5.3)
-----------------------SECOND-WEEK
08d after dieting: 98 (5.4)
09d after dieting: 89 (4.9)
10d after dieting: 85 (4.7)
11d after dieting: 78 (4.3) (today)

I understand that I am calling victory too soon and that I should wait for three months and get the updated HbA1C. But, hey, what is wrong with a bit of hustling for getting some encouragement ;-)

Interesting results.

How long do you think you will stay on the diet for?

Have you lost much weight? A BMi of 24 sounds pretty good already to me!

I would be really keen to see how your levels are when you get back to normal eating.

Well done and thanks for sharing the information

While most of the diabetics will be happy with 24 BMI, diabetes at normal/low BMI usually points to pancreatic insufficiency. I kept my fingers crossed when I took up the program. I am really relieved that the body responded.

I've lost about 4kg. I am presently a little above 22 BMI.

I am really hoping that I can stay on the diet for a little longer and lose another 4 to 6 kg so that the little tummy I carry melts away. But that will depend on how the blood sugar behaves over the next few days. If I see a precipitous drop in fasting sugar values, I'll have no choice but to terminate the diet.

I agree with you that I should've broken the champagne bottle only after seeing the BG response to normal eating. At this point in time, I am not feeling particularly adventurous. I am not planning to return to normal-normal eating (whatever that means). When I terminate Newcastle diet, I am planning to limit the daily intake to 1800C and continue to keep the carbs level low.

Hi,
Please let me know how you is your BS? I like to follow Newcastle diet if it make a difference.
Thank you
