I am a Type 2 diabetic and I have recently started eating a lchf diet. My Hba1c results just after Christmas were down to 44(originally 100) and I am hoping that by eating low carb I can get it down even lower. My problem is that I am the only one in our household that eats this way and I have to prepare all the meals ect. Does anyone have any advice that could perhaps make my life a little bit easier.

Why can't the other person in the household eat the same things as you?

It's not like it's poisonous to people with normal glucose metabolism.

Oh, good work on you HbA1c, keep it up!

You can eat the same foods as them, just skip the bread pasta rice etc and just have the meats and non starchy veggies. Get your fat intake separately via olive oil (neat), double cream (goes great with everything), cheese etc. Once your through the carb crave phase being around others eating carbs gets easier. Not everyone is ready to accept this LCHF revelation - just do it discreetly and reap the benefits. People will soon be asking what's your secret and probably follow suit...

Hear hear, well done on the HbA1c. How many in your household and what ages? With youngsters you're on a hiding to nothing but adults (some behave more adultly than others, mind) should be persuaded to compromise. Do they understand about your diabetes? Do you want us to end the A-team round? ;)

What we do, is we cook the same meal for everyone technically. ie if we are doing chilli or curry - then they have rice still - but I do veg for myself. If we have shepherds pie, I use cauliflower mash and there were a few complaints in the beginning before trying it, now they all prefer it. If I do a meal that requires potatoes - I just opt to have more veg. I keep a supplier of cauliflower in the freezer as well as buying fresh - as I find cauliflower seems to be like a miracle veg and you can eat it with everything...

Unless you are having things like pies - it should be relatively easy to cook one meal and just plate it differently.

I agree, I just do myself celeriac roasties, cauli rice or hash browns etc and feed the others normally. My parents should be low carb too but they are very old and not open to adjusting anything and as both take Lantus, I daren't risk giving them hypos.

It's just a case of thinking out of the box really .I cook roast celeriac and swede along with the roast spuds ,If others. are having bacon butties I have scrambled eggs and bacon .For shepherds pie cook some swede and Celeriac with the potatoes and mash them separately and just cover a corner of the pie with this You can put a layer of aubergine or celeriac in lasagne ,have caulli with Bolognese sauce instead of spaghetti,Eat fish ,meat ,chicken with loads of veg with butter

Have you considered just cooking them the same as you, with cauliflower mash, or cauli rice or whatever and not mentioning it's different? Sometimes we taste what we think we will taste, rather than the actual flavours. With a decent cheesy cauli mash, I bet they might comment it's a bit different (and you can suggest you added extra cheese or something) then see what they say at the ND of the meal.

If you say something like, "I'm making cottage pie, but it's not got potato on, it's got mashed cauliflower instead", you're priming them to. Object. That's human nature. Did you ever hide veggie or the like when your kids were little?

Fortunately, my OH, who is the (excellent)cook in our household, decreed at the outset he was not going to be cooking different meals for us, as it's too much like hard work, and actually we enjoy dining together, discussing the food, the day and so on. Making separate things just felt like a potential wedge. He low carbs now.

Admittedly, when I am away, he will have mashed potato, chips etc., but then why wouldn't he?

My wife is a carbohydrate addict and eats what she wants. We share proteins ie meat, fish, eggs and chicken etc. I prepare my own salads and add variety with nuts , cheeses, flax etc. In the beginning it was a bit of a battle dealing with the smell of toast, but thats all behind me now.
Its not that difficult to get used to eating LCHF while others tuck into their glucose laden grub.

Thanks for the advice. I am now past the carb crave phase "YAY" and I am finding so many yummy recipes on Pinterest. I've found the key is being organised but it is becoming easier as I go and it is quite easy to substitute ingredients and even my partner likes some of the food I have been eating and he sometimes has what I have instead so that is great.

There are four in our household. My partner and myself, our 15 yr old son and our 3 year old granddaughter. I can quite easily slip my granddaughter what I eat, my partner actually likes some of what I eat but others he won't touch with a barge pole and as for my son, well 15yr old males don't accept change too well but it doesn't worry me anymore. With understanding Diabetes, well I think they 'get it' sometimes. I don't think they realise it is a lifetime thing unfortunately. My father has been Pre Diabetic for about 3 years and he doesn't even get it yet. He loves his bread ect so I am trying to find alternatives for him as well.
