Hello,

So as most of you are probably aware....and annoyed of my constant rants about my back lol!! Sorry!!

Anyway, I am hopefully having an op on my back to relieve my bulging disc and sciatic pain....anyway...I have been looking to apply/get a new job as you are all also aware of my constant complaining of being bored, plus the money here is poo! Anyway getting to the point, should I stay at my current job until the op is all over and done with...or should i just go ahead now and look for a job. The reason I am asking is because I was thinking that if I was to start in a new job and then have to have a lot of time off shortly after starting due to my op then maybe that wouldn't be a good impression if that makes sense??

Opinions please?????? x
 
what do you 'do' if you dont mind me asking? Depends if you could start looking now and get something to come back to?

Maybe there is another job you would rather do that you can't do for physical reasons now, but could seriously consider post op ?
Would your ideal job require retraining ?
It's certainly a good idea to start thinking and looking, even while staying in the boring job while doing so.

I sit at a desk all day lol I work in an office but invoicing and filing not idea...but it really isn't great money!
 
I would love to work in a hospital environment as a nurse ideally but I don't have the money to do that now, or even just clerical or administrative, I don't know why I want to work in a hospital...I just do as well I know it would be different etc and hopefully not as boring!
 
I would get your back op out of the way first as you dont know just how long it will take to be ok again. My brother had his back sorted out a few years ago and needed to do a fair amount of exercise after the op.
 
I would have the op first. You have no idea how long you will need off work to recover, hospital appointments, physio etc. If your current employers pay sick pay, definitely stay with them. Any new employer wouldn't be too happy.

Yeah that was what I was aiming to do but just wanted opinions

My thoughts exactly lol!
 
You must also be aware that new employers will want references. Sometimes they will ask for the quantity of sick days.

When going to a new employer you also need to consider that many of them do not offer immediate sick pay, will not pay for the first three sick days and can request you to make up time for appointments etc

If you are bored at work, isn't there a way to ask for more responsibility or some additional work? This may well be appreciated and may well be looked upon favourably for pay rises in the future.
 
I think it would be unfair on your new employer so my advice is forget the job.
My son has recently had a bulging disc sliced and he is often in more pain now than before.
He's been told it will be around a year before he can consider going back to work and that ATOS lot seem to agree.
He was a computer engineer for Greater Manchester council and they miss hom his attitudes and skills so he's hoping he'll get his job bak but right now .... he has no job.
 
Yeah I know that, erm have asked before but there isn't anything else. It's only a small family run company!
 
Stay where you are Nicola for the time being until you've had the operation, the recovery time may be long and you would be obliged to tell a new employer this at the interview, at least with your current employer you should be entitled to sick pay whilst off work.
 
Jack the Lad's right. Alot of employers don't pay for the first three days os sickness anymore and would probably have a qualifying period before they pay it. My old employer also had a policy of doing sickness interviews if there were three episodes of sickness in a year, even if they were only one or two days each time. A new employer when interviewing you would expect you to be honest about the op which wouldn't bode well if they thought you were going to be off for any length of time. Good luck with the op, hope it goes ok and you're soon jumping around like a spring lamb!
