Yesterday I made an appointment at the opticians for an eyetest with a view to obtaining some corrective spectacles. When I answered in the affirmative to their question "are you diabetic?" they insisted on doing the full retina map thing even though my routine diabetes eye check up a few weeks ago showed no evidence of retinopathy. Is this usual, or a way to charge more?

Most good opticians will always do this test as part of their service,they want to know if there is a problem there already and will deal with it before they prescribe the glasses.
Many illnesses can be detected though a good eye examination, and good opticians have saved many lives especially with children ,best wishes.

Your opticians are only getting some baseline results. Even though you have only recently had these tests done, your optician will not be privy to the pics. It's good to know another person is going to be looking for changes in your eyes ! I'm not sure if they get paid extra for these services.

I used to work for specsavers & we did it as part of the sight test. We didn't get paid any extra for the service.

I too have worked for a optician, he made his money from the frames ,must have cost him £1.50 with the cost of lenses at £4.50,my wages £5.50,his rates and rent £5.50,added up to £250 a pair of specs. I used to worry because I only sold half a dozen pair some days, silly woman lol.
