Organ failure in icu

My father in law is currently in intensive care with his heart. In the bed opposite was a man who could have been late 50's. I was chatting to his daughter in the family room on the unit and she said he had liver failure and other organs were also affected by his diabetes and he could not be considered for a transplant. Apparently he never listened to advice or took it serious. It was very sad, he was moved the other day and I keep thinking about him and whether he is even still with us, he was very ill.
I have only being diagnosed a few months and eat low carb, the fear keeps me on track but if in the future I start to slip I will think about that poor man and his lovely daughter. I never want to end up on a machine in icu it hit home having the same condition. My teenage son is now taking my faddy diet more serious as he just thought I was going over the top. We went to McDonald's the other day and whist my family tooked into a treat and a break from visiting the icu I sat in the car eating a homemade prawn and advocado salad.

This is a big problem with diabetes and too many people do not start taking the management of it seriously until something drastic happens.
The government make a big issue over smoking and weight, but how often do you see warnings about diabetes and organ failure and skin ulceration?
