I’m looking to visit Bangkok area next year. I am a Low Carb Type 2 Diabetic taking only Empagliflozin and rest low carb eating, eat meat and fish, vegetables. Allergic to Lobster and family.
Has anyone any advice and experiences with staying and eating well there?
We usually do several weeks in Thailand in winter. Unfortunately that hasn't been possible this year, but I digress.
I am un-medicated for my diabetes, and live a LC lifestyle. During our time in Thailand, I just avoid the rice and noodles, and choose sensibly - avoiding stuff fried in batter or obviously sweet dishes, like sweet and sour. I sometimes get a bit of a funny look when ordering, say, a curry, and decline rice. Almost always main dishes are served in bowls or shallow dishes, meaning it isn't tricky to wrangle the food around the plate.
The Thai way of cooking includes even just a pinch of sugar in most dishes, to go along with their way of sweet, sour, salty and spicy.
You will usually be offered cutlery, rather than chopsticks, and more often than not that is a fork and spoon.
I do LOTS of walking in Thailand and go out walking every morning before the heat builds up, so one way and another, my A1c is always excellent when I return and I usually lose a bit of weight too, which I have to get back when I get home.
Bangkok itself is too busy and populated. We are about an hour or so south, in a small fishing village. Delightful. I hope you enjoy your time in the land of smiles.
