I am 78 years old and diabetic type 2 since 2007. I suffer from osteo-arthritis (degenerative arthritis). For the last 3 days I am suffering from severe pain in my thumb joints. NSAID are not recommended for diabetics and these also cause gastric problems. I take Tramadol, paracetamol and PENTAZOCINE but of little help.
Any one in similar situation please help me with your experience and remedies.

There are many members here who use NSAID's . You should discuss with your doctor about this as I can find no specific warning in the BNF (drug reference book) It may be something to do with your own medical history.

Hi Krishen,

I can understand your reluctance to take NSAID's in view of your heart problems mentioned in a previous post. They should also be used with caution in older people as there is a higher risk of gastric bleeds.
I think that whilst they are not specifically contraindicated for diabetics they must be used with caution in people with high blood pressure, heart disease and kidney problems.
As Sue says, discuss with your Dr. and ask for a review of your pain relief.

I am T2 and have been using NHS prescribed Voltarol Emulgel (a topical NASID) cream for longer than I can actually recall, but certainly for at least 10yrs, and both my GP and Endo do not have a problem with this.
As others have suggested, speak to your GP about this and get some relief. The relief is almost instant and lasts for a considerable time after application. Its what keeps me going and my wife still living here.
