so i'm just beginning to come to terms with being type 1 and through researching i find out that we're at increased chance of developing other autoimmune diseases!!

i'm 22 and diagnosed about 6 weeks ago, my type 1 was probably brought on by stress. anyone got any idea on the chances of developing more of these and do they come right away or after many years?

thanks,
howard.

Hi Howard.

Yes, there is a chance you may develop other disorders because you are a Diabetic. However, let's get things into perspective.

You are 22 yrs old and have your whole life ahead of you. There are many things you can do to stop many of the things you are worrying about from developing.

You have to make the decision to control your Diabetes and not let it run your life. Do that and as you will see from some of the success stories around here you will live to a ripe old age and probably never get any of the things you have found with your research. A lot of people who had various ailments brought on by the Diabetes have turned things around with the help and advice they have found on this forum.

So don't think you have a death sentence. Life is what you make it my friend. YOU can make YOUR life great.

Ken. :D

Great reply Ken!!

I read the post and thought ''oh crikey... hadn't thought of that'', just happy to have accepted the T1 arriving without booking at the age of 34!

Made me worry... then read yours and thought you're right! Not stopped me enjoying life yet, in fact makes things feel more of an achievement when you're able to ''stick two fingers'' up at diabetes, metaphorically speaking of course... :D

yeah i know you guys are probably right and i don't know how treatable those others are anyway. just finding the whole thing pretty daunting. i know of three type 1's now through friends of friends etc. and none of them have other problems, their all young (20's) and have had it since they we're kids.
