Out of control !

I had bacon and 2 eggs with 1 slice of dry wholemeal bread this morning and my 1 hour reading went up to 11.6? As I have tried this bread on its own previously without it effecting my blood sugar readings and also have had the egg and bacon on its own previously without it effecting my readings, could it be that it is the combination of carbs in the bread and protein in the bacon that has caused the higher reading? My 2 hr after reading was down to 8.3 mmol/L which I deem is okay but not particularly good .... hoping for 6 mmol/L before lunch.
What was your reading before breakfast? Your 2 hour reading of 8.3 seems fine. I wouldn't place much store in a 1 hour reading.

Jim. Need to know what your fasting number was, or at the very least, the reading before your first bite of breakfast.

Your other comments regarding readings of bread or bacon & eggs tells me you might have started high. Back to testing again (yeah, I hated that as well) and get a record running. The drop back was good (2.3) but the peak (as you'd know) was not that good.

Keep coming back mate ..... bit by bit, you / we will work this out.

Mike :)

Thanks for the help ... My morning fasting reading was 8.2 mmol/L .... I am aiming to get down to 5.5 mmol/L so although 8.3 might seem okay it isn't near enough to my personal goal ... thanks again .... kind regards .... Jim

Hi Mike, my early morning fasting read was 8.2 mmol/l. I'm going to start a record today but would it include what I ate as well as the numbers? Update: I have started a spreadsheet Mike and have dates, times, readings and notes of whether it was a fasting read or what I had eaten prior to the reading. I am determined to get down to 5.5 mmol/l or very near that figure. Thanks again Mate .... Regs .... Jim

That explains a fair bit of it Jim. A jump from 8.2 to 11.6 is a helluva lot better than (say) 6.2 to 11.6.

Now that's in context, try the bacon / eggs with no bread and see the rise at one hour ... and try this one ... a big glass of water in between. BTW, what drinks are you having pre / with breakfast? Tea / Coffee?

Mike

Yes Mike, I have a full glass of sparking plain water with my tablets at breakfast then a cup of tea with no sugar or milk after breakfast. Since reading your previous emails I am having a lot more water at meals and in between. Regs .... Jim

That's great, then. I am thinking along the same lines as Mike, that the 2hr rise was not that big, which is a good sign. I am sure you will achieve your goals with time. You are doing all the right things.

Thanks CatLady, 6.2mmol/l fasting read this morning so a great start to the day!

Sorry, was just wondering, but being a type one I've been told to not take 1 hour after food tests, it's two hours instead, is it different for type 2?

Some T2s test after 1, 2 and 3 hours. I'm T2 diet only and f I'm having something I've not had before, or more carbs than usual, I test after 1 hour so that at the 2 hour point I can see whether my BS is going up or down. If it's still going up I get after 3 hours to see if all is OK.

I have also been told 2 hours by my GP but as I am wanting much better control to get down to 5.5 mmol/L and have

Hi, my GP and the dieticians have told me to do the bloods only after 2 hours but I am aiming to get down to 5.5 - 6.5 on a regular basis and have looked at what other type 2 diabetics are doing to get those figures. I also find it very comforting and rewarding to see the 1 hour figure is still fairly good and it gives me a better indication of how my body is reacting to the food I have eaten as well as encouragement to keep to the path I have chosen.

Yes I totally agree and very good reasons to check more often .... thanks Daphne
