I was diagnosed in 2015 and and have good control until this year. My Hbac1 was 53 at last check and I am having to go on medication. I wondered if this means I will always have to be on it and how can you know if you are in remission if you take medication?

My recent was 53 mmol but am on 1000g / day metformin.
Over my 20 years since diagnosis + metformin , I was put on remission once about 10 years ago. Was instigated by GP without me saying anything. Was Results from my annual A1C tests. So my experience is it can happen. I have been better/ worse with lifestyle diet and exercise over the years. Was told can only have one remission !
Ask your practitioner about todays “rules” as things are not set in stone. Well done keep up with only choosing healthy foods.

@p11carb I always thought that whether a T2 is in remission or not was purely dependent upon their HbA1C test results and not anything their doctor says.
I believe that several members of this forum have fallen out of remission and managed to get back in again, so I doubt if the idea that you only get one shot at remission is correct.. Though I have no personal experience because once I got into remission about 3 yrs ago I haven't really been out of it.
I also think several of the Patients that Dr David Unwin has shown detailed results for over several years have also temporarily fallen out of remission due to 'carb creep'.
I once had an HbA1C of 43 due to persistent stomach infection which required 3 courses of antibiotics to clear just before my HbA1C test that year, but I don't consider that to have taken me out of remission.

I'm a little surprised with an HbA1C of 53, that 'you are having to go on medication. At that level I'd have expected it to be a joint decision as to how to precede rather than something you feel is forced upon you.I was diagnosed in 2015 and and have good control until this year.
