Pain and Rash - Worried

I was diagnosed with type 2 Diabetes mid December 2007. At the same time I was diagnosed with high Cholesterol and Blood Pressure. I am taking Ramipril for the Blood Pressure and Simvastatin for the Cholesterol along with 3 doses of Metformin for the Diabetes.

Around 7 or 8 months ago I noticed the vains on my left ankle / shin had come up and are very visible. Around 3 weeks ago I noticed hot red patch on my left shin. I thought it was just a skin iritation and left it but around 2 weeks ago (a week or so after the "rash" appeared) I started getting a swollen ankle and terrible pain after walking. It aches but as well as that the red patch is very tender and hot to the touch (like a bruise) and I get a strange pain in my calf which feels like a cold finger touching my leg sometimes and like a needle being stabbed in all around my calf at others. The pain got so bad at one point I was not sleeping.

The Doctor sent me for a blood and urine test for Kidney and Liver function tests but they came back clear but he said it was clear from the results my Diabetic Medication clearly wasn't working and prescribed Prandin (Repaglinide) to work along side the Metformin. I was also given a course of Antibiotics and a Cream for the rash. The swelling has 90% gone but the rash and pain is still there. Very concerned about it. I am going to get back to the Doctor asap but wonder if anyone has any advice or insight in the meantime.

Thanks.

Hi Spencer
Your conditions are same as mine, T2/BP/HC all over the last 11 years. i'm on 17 tabs + two injection of Byetta a day.
Having had some experience of side effects of various drugs prescribed to me I can tell you that in some rare cases:
Simvastatin can cause Rash/Muscle Pain.
Ramipril also can in rare cases cause a Rash/Itching.
Check your Patient Info leaflet with each drug supplied.
This is only a possibility. It is not a diagnosis.
You need to mention this when you see your GP - just to 'jog his memory' in the nicest possible way of course.
I know from experience that some of the drugs I was initialy put on gave me massive problems until I got them changed.
Best of luck
Ken

Thanks Ken, I'll mention it. I didn't consider those drugs as I have been on them for 15 months and problems only started recently.

Mods. Any chance these posts can be put together ???

Oops. Forgot.
Metformin also has rare causes- Rash !
Repaglinide ditto plus Itching.

All in all - I think there might be a connection ?????

Re: Red Rash and Tenderness on Calf/Shin

Sorry for the double post, I thought Ask the Experts attracted a different audience than the general forum.

The ankle sounds suspiciously like gout, that definitely needs a second opinion. Altogether it could be a number of things, almost certainly getting better control of your BG would be a good plan as it should greatly improve your cholesterol and blood pressure and circulation and inflammation in general

Hi there! Just thought I'd say that slimvastatin caused me to almost cry with pain , in the muscles, I couldn't sleep it got so bad. My GP took me off them and in 2 days the pain went. I now try to control cholesterol by diet.

The thing that doesnt add up is that ive been on them since december 2007 and no problems until now.???

Hi Spencer

Just s quick query, is your rash more like a bruise ? just wondering in case it's thrombophlebitis. I have that. It itches and you get can get burning sensations from it and it is tender to the touch.
Can't say that I've noticed any swelling on walking although my foot does aches although I think this may be to another problem.
