I know that the steel needle in the Freestyle Libre applicator can be a bit intimidating. It's far bigger than our Insulin needles, and if you apply the sensor in the wrong place, it can sting for quite a while. That could be quite a problem with youngsters, as well as us older folk.

Here's a tip that I was given by an old school Ward Sister in the 1970s. It works, and is equally good for applying Libre sensors, Insulin injections, as well as your annual Flu Jab.

COUGH. That's right: take a deep breath and give a loud cough as the needle goes in. You won't feel a thing.

Apparently, coughing shuts down the body's pain receptors, otherwise coughing would be extremely painful. It's a trick that was well known in years gone by; but is, apparently, mostly forgotten in the nursing profession.

The other trick is to ensure you apply the Libre Sensor where there's a layer of fat under the skin. Say, slightly towards the back of the upper arm, rather than on the side.

Anyhow, just remember you want a good loud cough, then you'll be confident to push that applicator firmly home, and you won't feel a thing.
