Hi,

Wondering if anyone is having the same issue. I am taking Metformin 1000mg in the morning and 500mg at night. I started around 3 months ago and my blood sugar is coming down very well, mainly due to my food regime I believe.

For breakfast I have oats, with some low GI fruit, pumpkin seeds, crushed raw nuts with some kefir mixed with a little milk, no sugar and one large mug of coffee.

For lunch I have a large green vegetable Nutriblast/Smoothie and maybe a fried egg or some cheese.

In the evening, usually chicken, turkey or fish with a large salad with olive oil and/or pumpkin oil and either some wild rice, buckwheat etc etc.......oh and a glass of red wine!

So far so good.......

Last night, I had some leftover chicken, fried in some coconut oil, stir fried mushrooms with beanshoots, a dash of soy sauce and two large serving spoons of fresh boiled Kasha Buckwheat.......and some Cooking Organic (so it says) Argan Oil sprinkled on the chicken. (Only the first time that I have had Argan Oil)

2-3 hours later my heart rate was at 100-120 and did not settle down until 03.00am when I had to go to the loo with loose stools (sorry for the detail) and after that all seemed to be OK. I took my blood sugar when the palpitations first started and that had not spiked at all. My BP was a bit higher than normal though. 140/80. It's usually 115/75 or slightly less. That Metformin is a beast.....I am looking for natural alternatives.

My question.....do you think this was a carb rush? Was the proportion of carb too much? Could the Argan Oil interact with Metformin? This is not the first time something like this has happened......I had a terrible first week when I cut down on high GI products like potatoes etc etc......my palpitations were awful. But then everything settled down. This only happens at night. I should say that I am naturally an anxious person and with nothing to lean on now...like a whisky...:)).....my body has to fend for itself. Good points about this regime....I have lost around 5 inches around my waist, blood pressure has dropped, I have much more energy, sleep much better, my skin is not dry any more etc etc....so all good.....except the occasional palpitations at night after food.

Maybe I am dropping my blood sugar too quickly? I have only been doing this for 3 months and my HbA1C comes up soon and I am expecting a 7% or less. Suggestions very welcome! Thanks!

Hi this is something that’s recently happened to me ....

am so glad to find your thread on here ..... I’m prediabetes and I wanted to start a LCHF diet before being told I am actually medically a T2 on paper. I have had palpitations before in the past and now I look back all connected to diets of one kind or another. This time I’ve been on a strict LCHF and keeping my bg’s averaging 6.4 each day so quite pleased with that plus I’ve noticed a weight loss already but the palpitations are NOT GOOD constant until things seem to settle with a combination of trying to distract myself to eating more carbs to even a glass of red wine !

I think rather than a carb rush it’s like a carb withdrawal ??? Anyone else felt this ??

If thread was new I'd have asked OP if coffee was decaffinated? Mind you I've read even decaf hasn't all caffeine removed.

I too had severe palpitations on too low a carb diet. I ended up on a betablockers then it increased. I'm reassured that wasn't my levothyroxine tablet nor iron deficiency as I was deficient then.
I've seen the low carb programme mention palpitations for some. Not everyone.
Any restricted diet can cause symptoms of some sort and many only want the weight loss one.
Some will say my palpitations was coincidence and that they never experienced palpitations.
What are you going to do about yours? Seen a GP?

Mine was very scary and was accompanied with chest pains so I was given a cardiologist.
As soon as mine was stopped with more betablocker I stopped losing weight too.

I had this when I started low carb, always in the night too. I read somewhere that being low on certain minerals could cause it and although I always take a multi mineral supplement each morning, I up it to 2 tablets just for a few days and it stopped. Not saying that this is the answer but that is what I found helped me.

I never had palpitations, but had a variety of other symptoms which got significantly worse after starting metformin. I was convinced it was Lactic Acidosis. I bough a lactate meter, and sure enough I had elevated lactate levels around 2.2 ( 0.3 - 1.3 normal range). My point is low carb diets will increase Acidity in the blood, as will Metformin, add in a shortfall of insulin. and you may experience some of the symptoms of Metabolic Acidosis. Best advice increase water intake and electrolytes ( Salt / Potassium / Magnesium ).

In the end I changed from Metformin to Amaryl, which doesn't give me any symptoms.
