Pancreatitis & diabetes

Does anybody here have diabetes that occured after few episodes of pancreatitis? One of my cousin's friend after 3 episodes of pancreatitis developed DKA. Then he is on basal bolus therapy now. He is found to be insulin resistant too.

Hi, I am currently recovering from a one off bout of severe acute pancreatitis. Whilst I was very ill ,on diagnosis of pancreatitis, I was put on insulin. I was formerly on metformin but as my pancreas had completely lost all function and my blood sugars climbed it became apparent that the metformin did not work. I have been on insulin twice daily injections for 2 months now.I am still working with my practice nurse specialist on doasge as I have complications from the pancreatitis and so controlling my sugar levels isn't always straightforward.
 
It's a little misleading. In hospital the diabetic nurse said I was type 1 because my pancreas was not working at all but, I was also told that as I was type 2 to begin with then you cannot change from a type 2 to a 1. You become a type 2 on insulin. There is research out there that shows you can become type 1 at any age and it isn't just the younger people that get type 1.Still doesn't answer your question as I seem to be both.
 
We're back to the only 'official' definitions that there are. This link is from the US ADA but is almost word for word the same as the World Health organisation definition. Diabetes due to pancreatitis is an 'other specific type' so neither T1 not T2.

It seems that simple box ticking ie T1 or T2 doesn't anywhere near cover the whole gamut of known causes for diabetes.
Some people with pancreas damage will be more like people with T1 , some more like people with T2 . (and I suspect that depends on what caused the pancreatitis in the first place and also how much damage it caused)

Can you make out what might have caused your pancreatitis in the first place?
