...but as a fairly new newcomer to diabetes I'm seeing a lot of posts here of some folks being T2 and on insulin.

So, can somebody please explain to me the difference between a:

T1 - who's always on insulin anyway

and

T2 - also on insulin (if so diagnosed)?

I believe being T2 on insulin does NOT make one a T1?

Cheers

hiya
new myself but from my understanding type 2 is progressive and in some cases may need to be on insulin if the meds are not working as far as difference im not sure there is much if any if both a tpe 1 and type 2 are on insulin.
i dont think a type2 2 on insulin can be a type 1
but i may be wrong :)

T1 - cells dying in pancreas, so cannot produce insulin
T2 - resistant to insulin, so needs diet controlled or drugs that reduce insulin resistance or drugs that make pancreas produce more insulin or insulin injection

You are correct, if you are type 2 and on insulin that does not make you type 1. You can have both type 1 and type 2 diabetes though.

Thanks to both of you for your interesting replies.

HLW kindly states "...........or drugs that reduce insulin resistance or drugs that make pancreas produce more insulin........."

Is it known which action Metaformin does? I'm on this 500mg x 3 daily (as a T2).

Cheers

Metformin is a biguanide antidiabetic. It works by decreasing the amount of sugar that the liver produces and the intestines absorb. It also helps to make your body more sensitive to the insulin that you naturally produce.

Here is a link to Metformin information I posted some while ago.......
