Having been a Type 1 for over 43 years I have concluded that apart from your spouse none of your family understand what it is really like to live with this condition. They all make sympathetic noises asking whether I needed something to eat at odd times however when I am actually low they ask annoyingly why don’t I eat enough in the first place! Trying to explain to them the difficulty and complexity involved in getting the balance right between insulin and carbohydrates is futile. As I said your spouse is the only person who really understands and experiences what it is like to manage this condition 24 hours a day with constant battles between hypos and hypers. I can categorically say that without the support and care from my amazing wife I wouldn’t be here today.
