Peanut butter cravings

I really crave peanut butter these days. Never had before. I eat it by the spoonful on its own. I'm wondering if this is pointing to some particular nutrient deficiency in my diet?

I'm a T2 btw.

Hi PickledPepper,

Just wanted to say you are not alone. I too am a secret peanut butter eater. Well, i can't have peanut butter sandwhiches any more because of the carbs in the bread and i loved them before the diagnosis. I buy cashew nuts and peanuts for snacking as they are low in carbs.

I buy the peanut butter for the 'kids' and dont tell the missus about my 'vice'. I know its bad but i have been known to 'stick my finger in' when there is no one around.

I think rather than pointing at a nutrient deficiency, with me its pointing at me being a pig. After all, we are but human and not robots and a little bit is ok i'm sure. Apparrently nuts are good for the digestive system - this is how i justify things to myself.

Hi Pickledpepper

Im sure small amounts of peanut butter won't hurt you, Just be carefull i know nuts are high in protein and with butter as well im sure probably high in fat. I love any kind of nut peanut, walnuts brazil etc..... i'm not a great fan of peanut butter but i must admit i have in the past when its been in the cupboard i have induldged in a teapoon. I think most people have food cravings

Like the saying a little of what you fancy does you good.

It wouldn't be so bad if I didn't demolish half the jar....lol

I checked the nutrients:

Per 100g

2.2g Protein
12.0g Carbs
6.3g of which sugars
5.7g starch
52.6g fat
9.8g saturated
26.1g mono-unsaturated
16.7 polyunsaturated
5.6g fibre
0.8g salt

Buy organic PB. There's no reason you can't enjoy the odd (table...) spoonful (providing you are already limiting your carbs).

Even better than PB is Almond Butter. You canbuy it in health food shops, and is lower in carbs than PB.

Re: cashews - you should avoid these nuts as they have a much higher carb content than other nuts.

(P.S - I'm a bit of a nut butter freak myself! But I'll make a large spoonful last 10minutes MINIMUM!)
