They are a no no for me they send my BG really high but like other foods some people may be able to tolerate them......but not the large apple I eat every day

I've always thought of them to be one of the sweeter fruits and one to be careful of !

Pear or no to pear, that is the question !

You can find more than one website on Google praising the humble pear, for example as an aid to reducing the risk of Type 2 among women. I class these sites with the ones that say microwave cookers are dangerous. I just don't believe them.

I can handle a small pear, or a small apple, or a very small tangerines,, any bigger is a no, no!

But the only way to find out what a pear might do to your glucose levels, is to eat one (or maybe half one) and test. I've not tried pears since I've been diabetic as my husband only buys Conference pears, which I don't much care for.... Comice or Williams and I might be more tempted to investigate!

Though it's very likely that the article is exaggerating the benefits, the pear does indeed have one nutritional property that could be useful in diabetes (or diabetes prevention). It's quite a good source of the mineral chromium, which is supposedly an important nutrient for maintaining good glucose tolerance.

If you look at Table 1 in the linked page you'll see that pears are very high on the list of chromium rich foods. Dried dates are similar (per 100g), but of course they are (gram for gram) vastly higher in sugar than pears. If that table is correct then just one medium (178g) pear would contain as much chromium as about 8 eggs, or nearly 4 lbs of beef!

The net carbs in pears in very similar to that of apples, and for me personally they have a similar effect on my BGL. I tolerate one a day quite well, though sometimes if it's a larger pear I will slice it in half and put the other half in the fridge for later.
