Yes I know type 2s who make cakes for meals at friend's houses & sit there & eat 2 or 3 portions in one sitting. One of them recently had treatment for retinopathy but can't see the link between eating massive amounts of sugar and the problems with his sight. Neither do they understand the damage caused by foods such as bread, pasta etc. Other friends recently cooked a meal for me & hubbie which consisted entirely of recipes obtained from the net "for diabetics". However I have been type 1 on low carbohydrate diet now for nearly 56 years (in Feb 2017) so was unable to eat most of their carefully researched & prepared menu. I attempted to explain why but they seemed to think they knew better than me......!!!!I find my girlie friends love cake!! If i meet for coffee then I always have the cake wars!! Why they drool over which colossal slice they are going to pick and I say 'no thanks' I get met with the usual "can't you just have a treat?" My oldest friends that have always known my diabetes don't question it but others do and my worse culprit friend is actually a type 2 and still not aware....
I have found that wine has no noticeable effect on BS. The only beer that I drink is craft beer and that elevates my BS about the same as a low carb meal.Hi
From my experience, when I drink beer my blood sugars will reach a peak about 1hour (About 2.5 pint time) after starting drinking, and then will fall. They will then carry on falling, no matter how many beers I carry on drinking.
The peak level, will depend on 1) If I have done my exercise in the morning, and 2) Is this a consecutive day drinking...ie Friday and then Saturday.
The worst beers to drink seem to be cask beers, and Keg beers seem to be better. Luckily for me the "craft" beers seem fine. (Chico, yeast stain if you are into beers...Brewdog, Kernel, Beavertown and others)
I have done, multiple 15mins tests when drinking, much to friends amusement, so I can pretty much call the peak and when it will arrive now.
But yes, people shouldn't try to force people into drinking, or eating "A little bit of cake".
I have the same problem. Unfortunately I have some problems to follow discipline and sometimes I slip up and eat more than I should.Family think I have lost too much weight and are trying to pressure me into easing up on my diet. But they should know by now I am more stubborn than all of them put together.
I had the same problem with fags. Even after my 2 strokes, There were many at work who could not accept that I had finally quit the smokers doorway to heaven(?).Good for you for making a stand.
Many, many people allow themselves to be lured from the right decision, by pressure, or by just wanting to drink/eat/whatever.
Personally, I often fall into the 'What the hell, it is just this once...' but then my body wants/expects it the next day too, and that is harder to resist than just standing firm the first time. I have to keep being reminded about this!
Try Sweet potato (yam). We roast ours alongside normal baked pots, or we spiralize or chip and bake in coconut oil.Last night I thought -OOOooh, a 'spare' potato - and ate it. BG is still over 10, and it is 16 hours later.
There is no such thing as a safe level of starchy vegetables in my life.

The rule I apply is to use my meter to see what effect a food has on me personally. I too cannot take standard tatties or rice or pasta, but I found I was fine with sweetpots. From what I have read on book the GI of sweet potatoes is lower than regular potatoes, so thet should make lower spikes...
