Peer Pressure

She is the only person ever who has behaved in this way (in over 55 years of diabetes)--most people don't even say anything &, if they do, once everything is explained to them they just accept it & never again make remarks--what on earth was this lady up to...?

I find my girlie friends love cake!! If i meet for coffee then I always have the cake wars!! Why they drool over which colossal slice they are going to pick and I say 'no thanks' I get met with the usual "can't you just have a treat?" My oldest friends that have always known my diabetes don't question it but others do and my worse culprit friend is actually a type 2 and still not aware....

Hi Chook. Other than having a protein boost if I get the headache feeling I don't test so I cannot answer your question. I drank my pint slowly over the evening and thoroughly enjoyed it. I had 3 pints of soda with it so I guess it was very diluted. All the lets dance, rebel rebel exercise probably helped too. I plan to do the same next week which is a T Rex tribute so I anticipate plenty of born to boogie there too. We do home brew so I treat myself to the occasional port glass of cider or wine if I have not clocked up any other sins.

It was sweet of hubby to treat you even if he got it so wrong. Maybe he likes a Baileys and by making out it was for you he could have a glass himself. I quite like Baileys but not enough that giving it up is a hardship. Bombay Sapphire and prosecco are much nicer. In fact we got a couple of bottles of £5 prosecco in Asda last week. I thought I can have a taste and then swop my glass with someones empty glass. Interesting they do not affect your bs. I wonder if I would be ok. I really like amaretto with those little biscuits. Missing out on that makes me sad but if I can have a prosecco instead that would be ok. I imagine there would be a lot less sugar if I substituted them.

I can handle the chocolate issue with family. It is more difficult with pressies and friends buying everyone chocs at the snack bar. If they buy everyone else something I get one so they do not leave me out and I do not want to go "hey I am going to make an issue of you being a decent human being" with them. My hubby does buy a load of chocolate but whilst he always has offered me some it is for himself. His parents ran a corner shop of the sort that used to have petrol pumps and papers. If i believed him I would think his meals were chocolate for breakfast, lunch and tea. Up to 10 years ago he would buy coke and pepsi in the 24 can boxes. His bs is very good. Diabetes is just not fair. Although if my gp had been competent and acted on my blood test results instead of filing them I would have had a chance.

Hi Nina Does your type 2 friend know the risks to her health? If my diabetic nurse had been my only source of information I do not think I would know anything more than recovery times are a lot longer and I must wash my feet before I go to see her (wearing crocs on the allotment is not conducive to socially acceptable trotters) . The Desmond course covered it but if your friend missed that or her group did not make an issue of them the risks could have been lost in the general morass of info.

I find the big problem is finding somewhere to eat anything but cake, burgers, pizza and noodles (I live in Coventry lets just say noodles are a local phenomena). The only places I have found so far are wetherspoons and a local vegetarian cafe. We were in central London a couple of weeks ago and ended up doing Wetherspoons for all 3 meals. We did try to find somewhere else but did not have time to get to the museums.

Yes I know type 2s who make cakes for meals at friend's houses & sit there & eat 2 or 3 portions in one sitting. One of them recently had treatment for retinopathy but can't see the link between eating massive amounts of sugar and the problems with his sight. Neither do they understand the damage caused by foods such as bread, pasta etc. Other friends recently cooked a meal for me & hubbie which consisted entirely of recipes obtained from the net "for diabetics". However I have been type 1 on low carbohydrate diet now for nearly 56 years (in Feb 2017) so was unable to eat most of their carefully researched & prepared menu. I attempted to explain why but they seemed to think they knew better than me......!!!!

Hi

From my experience, when I drink beer my blood sugars will reach a peak about 1hour (About 2.5 pint time) after starting drinking, and then will fall. They will then carry on falling, no matter how many beers I carry on drinking.

The peak level, will depend on 1) If I have done my exercise in the morning, and 2) Is this a consecutive day drinking...ie Friday and then Saturday.

The worst beers to drink seem to be cask beers, and Keg beers seem to be better. Luckily for me the "craft" beers seem fine. (Chico, yeast stain if you are into beers...Brewdog, Kernel, Beavertown and others)

I have done, multiple 15mins tests when drinking, much to friends amusement, so I can pretty much call the peak and when it will arrive now.

But yes, people shouldn't try to force people into drinking, or eating "A little bit of cake".
I have found that wine has no noticeable effect on BS. The only beer that I drink is craft beer and that elevates my BS about the same as a low carb meal.

Earlier I decided to have a tot of whiskey checked my BS short while later they had shot up to the highest level for months 8.8 now about an half hour after that they are at 5.7 wow what a spike.

Luckily at over 6ft and slightly heavier than I should be, no one ever tries to pressure me into anything, or even makes comments about what I should or shouldn't do ..
Sometimes size can really help towards a quiet life :):)

Family think I have lost too much weight and are trying to pressure me into easing up on my diet. But they should know by now I am more stubborn than all of them put together.

I have the same problem. Unfortunately I have some problems to follow discipline and sometimes I slip up and eat more than I should.

Good for you for making a stand.

Many, many people allow themselves to be lured from the right decision, by pressure, or by just wanting to drink/eat/whatever.

Personally, I often fall into the 'What the hell, it is just this once...' but then my body wants/expects it the next day too, and that is harder to resist than just standing firm the first time. I have to keep being reminded about this! ;)
I had the same problem with fags. Even after my 2 strokes, There were many at work who could not accept that I had finally quit the smokers doorway to heaven(?).

My mantra at the time was It's a Mugs game. And that saw me through the hard times. Still helps me today.

Funnily enough, sausages is one of my more successful LC meals. I get no spike from 3 bangers and sweetpot spirelli. But I find that it is important to carefully select the maker. The cheapo supermarket paks do spike me a bit, but that is not a surprise.

I get mine from Aldi, and my whole family find them very tasty. so we all win out, even the bank manager.

Last night I thought -OOOooh, a 'spare' potato - and ate it. BG is still over 10, and it is 16 hours later.
There is no such thing as a safe level of starchy vegetables in my life.
Try Sweet potato (yam). We roast ours alongside normal baked pots, or we spiralize or chip and bake in coconut oil.

I think I'll pass - if ordinary potato does such a number on me, I doubt that something which contains even more carbs would be a good idea.
The rule I apply is to use my meter to see what effect a food has on me personally. I too cannot take standard tatties or rice or pasta, but I found I was fine with sweetpots. Others report similar results with them, so it is not something that is peculiar to me.

Now I have sweetpots often, and my bgl tends to drop after such a meal. Completely the opposite of what one would expect given the carb content value only. I test at 2 hr and 4 hr, and both readings are generally lower than the pre meal reading. So it is not being delayed by fat or protein

Yes, I can eat limited amounts of sweet potatoes whereas ordinary spuds impact on my BS like cake does. I also find I can eat a limited amount of parsnip and quite a lot of butternut square, both of which are nice roasted in place of roast potatoes with Sunday dinner. In fact I think they are nicer.

From what I have read on book the GI of sweet potatoes is lower than regular potatoes, so thet should make lower spikes...

Yeah, I read that too.
So I ate some.
Bad mistake. Spiked me higher than potatoes.
There is no justice in life... ;)
