Pesky dawn phenomenon

Re DP, Google is your friend. :) Here's a lot of info out there, explained a lot better than I can. ;)

And I don't think I've ever had pink paste sausages at maccies...

Well im assuming the sausage that they use is pink before its cooked i dunno

Ill Put Mr Google to work lol

Just done a reading re the Dawn phenonomon and it came up as 9.0.Hmmm it seems i do get a spike early in a morning like others on here have reported.

Some people swear by caffeine and nicotine gum for all sorts of things, but I've never been a huge fan of coffee and as an ex-smoker, I'm hesitant to use any form of nicotine again, so nope, not on my list of things to try next!!!

Yeah im an Ex smoker as well but i still get my daily blast of nicotine but with an Inhalator.I wonder if that can be termed as the same thing.I dont drink much coffee i prefer a nice cuppa tea

I have just found this very interesting thread, I too have been doing a few 'experiments' trying to lower my pre breakfast levels, (without much success), but I have found a way of stabilising my morning levels immediately after testing.

* I test very first thing in the morning, as soon as I get up. Over last 8 weeks this has averaged 6.1 (max 7.6, min 5.2).
* Immediately after testing I have some a large handful of fruit ( normally blueberries and/or strawberries, blackcurrents, raspberries) with a good measure of double cream or plain Greek yoghurt.
* my average 1 hour testing after this breakfast over last 8 weeks is 6.4, but I do not do this test every day, as it is so predictable it is a waste of test strips, most of these tests have been when I have been particularly high in the morning. Eg 24-May, pre breakfast reading was 7.0, ate some berries and cream, 1 hour later I was 5.2.
* I always try to keep active immediately after breakfast! sitting down or lying down does not help.

1 to 1 1/2 hours after my berries and cream I have a 2nd breakfast, egg, sausage, bacon mushrooms and tomatoe.
1 hour after my 2nd breakfast my average test reading over last 8 weeks is 5.6

I think the key is; test immediately you get up, eat something quick immediately you get up, then have a proper breakfast later when you can.

This works for me, and if you can fit something like this into your busy morning schedule it may be worth a try.

Have you stopped this double-breakfast thing Ian? Wondering as I'm now seeing my weird morning results as DP.

@sunspots So, how's it going? How are you adjusting to forum addiction? Beats carb addiction any day, doesn't it?

Forum addiction is my UNDOING. I never foresaw this. Online news reading, okay, Amazon / Moviemail Trawling, okay, but FORUM ADDICTION?

Alas, alas. Where's my life?

I know.
I get separation anxiety if I'm further than 15 feet from the iPad.
Never saw it coming!

I Still have a double breakfast, but no longer fruit. I have a mix of flaked almonds, pumpkin seeds, flax seeds pine nuts with double cream or Greek yoghurt, as soon as I get up, this definitely works for me as 1hr later my BG are around the same as pre breakfast.... Then I have sausage bacon eggs. If I slip the 1st breakfast my BG levels rise by the time I can cook breakfast.

I have also found that if I exercise after dinner, before bed my BG levels drop by between 0.5 and 1.0 (depending on how hard I exercise) and then stay stable overnight. If I don't exercise they are always higher in the morning.

Diagnosed T2 in sept 2013, BS levels 20+. BMI 22, age 59. Then diagnosed T1 / LADA in December. On a LcHf diet taking no insulin or medication, and striving to keep my BS readings to dr Bernstein's recommended 4.6 pre breakfast and 5.6 2hr after eating in order to keep as many insulin making pancreas beta cells as possible for as long as I can.

Thanks Ian, that sounds practical and I wd never have thought of it.

Okay, so I had part 2 of my Desmond course today.

Somebody asked the question as to why their reading first thing in the morning was higher than at any other time.

The session was facilitated by a sister and a dietician. They both said they didn't know because that is when it is normally the lowest after you have been resting all night.

I offered my knowledge of DP/LD etc etc.,but everybody looked at me as though I was from another planet, because how could I possibly know if the sister and dietician didn't.?

It really brings home the value of this site.

Ive enrolled on the Desmond course or rather the nurse enrolled me on it.I said hello on their facebook page and they said hello back and asked me to ring them re the courses they have to offer.I had a very informative chat with them and they have taken my details etc and the lady on the phone said there was a waiting list as long as 6 months for the Desmond course. So im not expecting to hear anything this side of christmas.Wait and see on that score.

Johnboy, I am lucky that I am having testing strips prescribed, but the deal was that I went on the course. However, the course is aimed at the basics of type 2 and its control and I don't think you should lose too much sleep at having to wait so long, although I understand that is frustrating.

Ok ill not loose sleep at the waiting as its the same as anything else a waiting list.Im currently waiting to be taken in to hospital for further tests on my kidneys/bladder area. Not expecting it to be anytime soon.Im cool with that.

Totally right Jim.

:wideyed:

It's dropped!

Suddenly, and for absolutely no reason that I can work out, my 'on waking' has stepped down a chunk.

Last week, and for months, it has been in the 6.5-7.5

This week it has been consistently 5.8-6.3

Scratching head (but not complaining!)

Wish mine would drop...still getting high 7's some mornings. I'm thinking of trying exercise before bed....but I already exercise between lunch and dinner and don't want to change that.Hoping I have energy for something else like a walk round the block.

I can't say I really ever had DP, but when my scores, in general, were dropping, I found they notched, rather than slid down. I have no explanation for it, but it felt like one of those punches I could roll with.

Do you have any HbA1c tests left in the fridge? If you do, it might be interesting to run one in a couple of weeks; in the interests of science, of course.

Yes, have 1 wedged behind the butter.

I'm going to try and wait til beginning of October. Every 2 months seems doable.

My problem is the insulin resistance (I think), and it ain't ever going away. Well, not for the foreseeable few years... And @Indy51 recently pointed me at a fascinating chain of blog posts on this subject. Apparently, the lower carb you go, the more chance you have of experiencing a somewhat raised baseline BG. It isn't a bad thing, just a thing. Proportional to the level of insulin resistance (mine seems to be huge). And the benefits of LC (for me) outweigh the negatives a zillion times...

I had completely given up.

I can easily halt the rise in BG after opening my eyes - a Brazil nut will do that.

But nothing ever seemed to touch the pre-waking DP.

Shrug.

Will see if this change is here to stay or just a passing phase... :)
