Ive been type 1 for 15 years now and I just have a question to ask... I'm not sure if this is actually true or if its just an urban myth as I cant remember... But I'm thinking about getting a piercing but not sure if blood sugars need to be well controlled for a while before I get something like that done...? So if any1 can answer this question for me and tell me if its true or not would be great, thanks

Hi Steph,

I've got a couple of piercings and tattoos and none of them have been a problem, you may just have to sign a form before they do it to say that you accept liability.

I'd recommend having something to eat before getting it done and make sure you're not heading into a hypo though.

Good luck!

That is definitely not true. You dont even need to tell the person doing the piercing that you are diabetic.

Same as claire1991, I have had several piercings and tattoos and never had a problem at all.

I disagree. I have several piercings & tattoos and I remember my doctor telling me yonks ago that you do have to have a good grip on your blood sugars/control because high bg can affect your body's ability to heal - we have an auto immune disease after all! But 98% of my piercings have healed perfectly & never had an issue with my tattoos. The only reason for the others not healing was the location - I have an abnormally small tragus & my ear stood no chance! :joyful:
