Hi,

please does anyone have any idea are there any insulins used that in anyway are derived from pigs if so what are the trade names, and countries of origin.

regards

Are you thinking about the latest Irish Pig scare.

I hadn't even considered that and I am on pig insulin too. A bit scarey.

Anyone confirm? I am sure it's fine.

I'm sure the pig insulin would be fine, surely like all insulins/medication ect. it would be screened. And as i'm in NI if anyone wants to post me over a bacon/ham/sausage sarnie i'd really appreciate it Droooooooooooll

I could be wrong but this might also be an enquiry for religious reasons since those of the muslim faith might very well have qualms about insulin derived from pigs. I am not sure what the answer is to this save to say that in the other abrahamic faith that has a similar dietary code, the preservation of life is considered far more important than religious doctrine and pig insulin is a permissable treatment.

hi, sorry about my delay in replying, as I do live in the republic, without scare mongering, I would like to know, with the latest developments the situation in the South of Ireland will affect countries worlwide. From what ive read today the contaminated animal feed wasnt sold in Northern Ireland but the the meat products have been so the risk is there also with government recommendations to discard all products that were made since September, does this mean any insulins that are a porcine derivative must be discarded and what if diabetics have been using the products, what risks etc anybody able to help,
As for testing it was i think notified to the Irish government authorities by another country so how safe is safe,

worried.

Hi Infidel,
Youv'e raised a very interesting point. If you have concerns about this then you could contact the Dept of Health and Children to ask what impact the pork ban has on porcine insulin products. Their website is

hi,

just had an email from Novo Nordisk, informing me that Novarapid or Levemir arent a porcine derivative, Im sorry but I only inquired about the stuff I use they can be contacted via their web site if anyone has any further questions, you will receive a prompt reply.
