Type 1 Pins and Needles and High Blood sugars

Type 1
Hi, I am looking for any advice to be honest as I am starting to get really down and depressed about this whole situation.

I have been type 1 diabetic for 4 and a half years and I completed the DAFNE course 4 weeks ago. Previous to the course I was on 24 Lantus before bed and was recommended by my nurse to be put on Levimer. Since being put on Levimer I started on 12 at night, 12 in morning, however this dosage has increased significantly from 12 at night to 24 at night and 18 in the morning, this being because every morning I wake up with minimum of 16-20mmol blood sugars EVERY SINGLE MORNING.

Which is frustrating as I consider to almost master carb counting as after spending almost half of my day trying to correct these high sugars I am keeping on top and keeping them in the DAFNE range.

However, For the past 9-10 days everyday I have had pins and needles in my foot and leg and sharp pain in my foot and top of my leg when I walk. My Diabetic nurse who is now on holiday told me to ring the diabetes centre to sort out a pump if needed, I have been ringing and trying for the past 4 days and asking to speak to a pump nurse and nobody is calling me back, after hounding and pestering them 3-4 times a day.

It has also got to point where I rang 111 3 days ago and when I visited somebody in A&E they told me to carry on taking paracetomol, which does nothing, I felt like she was just trying to get rid of me.

I visited my doctors yesterday who also told me to carry on taking paracetomol.

I am really struggling and getting really depressed from this.

Please does anybody have any suggestions or advice.

Thanks

Have you had any diagnosis of these 'pins and needles' and pain? Could it be neuropathy? Have you tried your GP for meds while you're waiting?

hi @Coreylewis21
I totally get how down you must be feeling -- it is cr*p when we don't feel good and worse knowing the D might be playing a part.........
are you testing your BG loads ??( I mean like 10 - 12 times per day ? ) are you confident with "looking after yourself" ??

it is a tough call -- and I am only suggesting that you try and take on board your DSN advice but adjust it to YOU !!
you could possibly need to increase doses -- talk to your DSN but be pushy and tell her you are not happy with the status quo.

I have been doing this for 45 years and I pretty much self manage -- IE : I make all my decisions for myself

as for the pins and needles it could be early neuropathy or depending on where it is in your body ( -- especially hands ) it could be carpal tunnel syndrome starting -- but talk to to your GP soonest !!!!!

all the best

@azure Hi thanks for your response, yes I have gone to my GP who told me to carry on taking paracetomol and said to go back if it carries on, after I had already told them I have done for over a week and it is only getting worse. Both my GP and the A&E was obviously busy so no matter how much pain I told them I was in they wasn't listening and just wanted to get rid of me.

As a response to both of you I am only 21 years old and been diagnosed 4 years, everybody I have asked doctors/nurse etc said would be impossible for it to be neuropathy, which I don't seem to understand.

@himtoo Hi thanks to you also much appreciated, I test them at least 10 times a day yes, I have doubled all my ratios and nearly tripled my background intake since I have been put on Levimer. I consider I am really good with controlling and keep in control with the levels once I bring down my morning sugars.

My DSN has gone on holiday for 6 weeks which is very frustrating as she reassured me if I had any problems they would be dealt with while she was away, I have kindly frustrated to her how depressed I am getting waking up every morning with 15-20mmol and she keeps telling me to up my dose and if it doesn't fix then to ring the center about a pump, which as I said in the original post the center seem to avoiding me.

How frustrating for you! Did your DSN mention a name of the person who'd be taking over her work? I had a spell when my diabetes centre never called me back, and it was so annoying. What I did in the end is phone at 8am and managed to catch a DSN. They really should be calling you back, but if they're short-staffed perhaps it's just an oversight so keep trying.

Has your GP ruled out other causes of the pain? Again, it looks like you're going to have to persist.

As regards the pump, could you try to speak to your consultant's secretary and ask for an appointment or more information? Or get your GP to write to them about it?

i feel for you. It must be upsetting and frustrating.

hey !!-- sounds like you have got the testing and adjusting going good -- perhaps the levemir doesn't suit you -- were your bloods better on lantus ??

are your bloods pretty much over 10 or 11 most of the time ??
do you get hypos ??

I only ask because perhaps your background and ratios may still not be correct -- can you talk to the people that ran your course for further help and input ??

I really want to help you get yourself sorted -- it is no fun being high BG

hugs
xx
