Pins & Needles

Hi Guys,

My name is Steph, I'm 32 years old and have been diagnosed with Type 2 since 2013. I currently take Metformin daily but have been changed today to Alogliptin as the metformin was causing stomach problems. My blood sugar reading was also 79, which is very high but also the lowest it has been in 4 years. I have never really had any problems before and I suppose I have been in denial and not really taking into consideration my illness at all as I have always felt nothing but well.

The thing that is bothering me the most is that I have had 'pins and needles'/numbness in my hands and feet continuously for the last 12 days. I also have a tingling feeling around my torso. The doctor said that she is sending me for tests but I have looked up possible reasons for this on the web (not sure that was a wise move) and am worried it could be neuropathy.

Has anyone else experienced feelings of pins and needles? Does anyone know if it is caused by high blood sugar, and also, the most important question is, once my blood sugar levels are under control, will these feelings go away?

Thanks, Steph

Yes it is neuropathy. It is damage to the nerve endings due to persistent high blood glucose. You need to get your HbA1C down to under 48mmol. I find taking a 75mg aspirin every day helps as this thins your blood. This has reduced my pins and needles significantly. If I run out of them within a few days the pins and needles come back. I've been on these for about 10 years. I also take 600 mg of Alpha Lipoic Acid daily. This is very good for neuropathy. Some people claim it even reverses it. I've only been on this for 2 months and It is helping a lot. I also run theee times a week. This helps with neuropathy too and reduces the symptoms. The main thing though is to get your bg levels under control. My HbA1C was running at 77 mmol for about 15 years. I have neuropathy and retinopathy now. I bought a freestyle libre about 4 months ago. These are amazing. My last blood test came back at 45mmol. I've reduced my insulin intake from 90 units a day to 40 units and lost 22lbs in 3 months by following a low carb diet. Good luck.

I've joined the forum on behalf on my hubby who has just been diagnosed with T2. It was the pins and needles and stabbing pains in his torso that sent him to the doctors in the first place ( we still aren't 100% certain whether he had shingles or whether this is neuropathy) but working on the assumption that it IS nerve damage he takes Alpha Lipoic acid 600mg per day and is now on a low carb diet. Our understanding is that once his BG levels are down then the sensations will improve. so far he has noticed an improvement as his levels started to come down so fingers crossed...
