Hi Everyone,
I would like to join you if I can?
I hope that I am in the right place – please correct me if I am not!
Two weeks ago I was given Metformin to take. I am now over the initial side effects thankfully! :D
I had a headache and nausea for about 4 days. I felt like I had a really bad hangover! :?
As far as I am aware, I don’t have T2DM. I haven’t been told that by the GP. I have been told that I am insulin resistant and to take Metformin.
I was diagnosed with PCOS in November last year and have now been put on Metformin. At the age of 32, my years for having children are running out so they are trying to sort out the PCOS!
I just wanted to find a forum with people that are taking the same medication that can help me along the way!
Will Metformin help in stabilising my weight? Has anyone lost weight whilst taking metformin?
What are the do’s and don’ts? I am new to all of this!!
Thanks in advance for your help!
Wising you all the very best!

Hi Danko, of course you can join us, in fact you already have :D

Welcome to the forum, I take metformin and it works in 3 ways, firstly it helps reduce insulin resistance, secondly it reduces the amount of glucose your liver produces and thirdly it acts as an appetite suppressant so yes, it may indeed help you loose weight as it has helped others :D

Hi Danko and welcome to the forum :) If you are up to a lot of reading(!) here are two links for you. The first is general information on Metformin:

and the second is the link to the main thread on Metformin which is long.... You should find answers to any questions you may have in there. I am sure other Metformin users will be along shortly to share their experiences with you:

Welcome Danko,

I am aware that metformin is prescribed for PCOS and you say you do not think you have type 2 diabetes mellitus. However you say that you have been told you are 'insulin resistant'. That is how certainly type 2 diabetes can be described.

Have you had any blood glucose tests to rule out or confirm diabetes? Are you taking metformin for the PCOS or for your insulin resistance or both? I am just wondering in case the GP has not communicated this very well.

The forum is obviously aimed at people with diabetes, although metformin gets much discussion!

Hi,

When I met with the GP, he just told me that people with PCOS are insulin resistant and because I have PCOS I am insulin resistant so I should be taking metformin.

I haven't had any blood tests - which is why I assume that I have been given the metformin. The GP just asked me if anyone in my family are diabetic. I told him that my maternal grandmother was.

The GP gave me 12 weeks supply of Metformin. 500mg twice a day. He has told me to go back in 10 weeks time.

I am however wondering how he will measure if it is working or not considering blood tests weren't undertaken!

This is why I am not sure if I have been given them for T2DM. I am assuming not.

I assume that the metformin is for PCOS. I would have thought that if the metformin was prescribed for DMT2 then I would have had blood tests?

I am confused! I need to ask the GP to communicate with me a little better!

With the usual caveat that nobody here can diagnose or give medical advice, I found the following info.

From a quick read of wikipedia, insulin resistance, obesity and diabetes are strongly correlated with PCOS. Metformin appears to be often used as part of a range of treatments. However exercise and dieting seem to be also often suggested, and I read that lower carbohydrate diet is also sometimes helpful.

I found this quote on additional benefits of met:
Several studies have recorded the use of Metformin in women with PCOS. Metformin is effective in reducing testosterone levels and in making the menstrual cycle more regular.

This page also had some useful info on metformin in PCOS

It might be worth asking how the GP knows you are insulin resistant - i.e. is this just a general assumption or have there been any tests - and whether any further tests to rule out diabetes might be beneficial. As I say though, I'm not a medical professional and can't advise you.
