Although being 'controlled' for 16 months now, i'm still confused by the readings my Hba1c gives me (via my GP) and the BS monitor (new toy !!!!) ones.

When diagnosed i was told i was type 2 at 116 (whatever they are called's).. after 16 months i'm now told I'm its down to 55.

All seems good until i take the monitor readings and try and convert them .. currently, and for last week, have shown (average) of 7.2 mmol, which although I'm happy with I cant seem to relate this back to the 'other' scale... various website converters throw wild numbers back at me!

Before hounding my GP to make sure i was right with my understanding of "55", I thought I'd ask the people that know :)

The numbers your doctor gave you are, presumably, your HbA1c - a long term measure of BG control; there are regression formulae to predict average BG based on HbA1c (and vice versa) (tool).
Any discrepancies with the measured meter average will most likely be due to the fact that the average of your meter test results are not fairly weighted (e.g. stable BG overnight carries the same weight as a post-meal spike).

Agree with AMB except for the tool posted which converts home readings to the old HbA1c.

They used to measure the HbA1c as a percentage (%) they now measure it as mmol/mol. Your readings of 116 mmol/mol convert to 12.7640% (12.8% rounded up) and 55 mmol/mol converts to 7.1825% (7.2% rounded up) which is exactly the same as your home average readings although generally home reading averages are a little higher than the HbA1c. See AMB's comment re discrepancies/skewed readings.

The tool to convert HbA1c units from DCCT to IFCC or the old percentage system of measurement that many members here still refer to and the new system recently introduced and vise versa is here should you have use for it again. Link = http://www.diabetes.co.uk/hba1c-units-converter.html confusing isnt it?!!

Hope this helps

Gentlemen, many thanks..

Happy to see the conversion applied equates the two readings.. the conversion I used threw back some very high numbers!.

I will keep the link and utilize it after the next Hba1c test !

Onwards and upwards..
