Please help me, am I diabetic?

Hi Everyone, waiting for the doctor is a long wait for me. I have an appointment next week. But until then it's been a terrible journey.

I'm trying to figure out what is happening to me. Whenever I eat sugar, I feel knocked out for 2+ days. Same with potatoes. I also feel very fatigued and in pain.

Yesterday, we had potato wedges and crispy chicken (I usually don't eat fast food) and freshly squeezed orange juice. I tested my sugar levels and they were around 12 after about 20 mins. I tested again 15 mins later and they dropped down to safe levels.

However, I have been sleeping since 5pm and it is now 12 pm the next day and I still feel like I am drowsy. Could I have diabetes?

I was diagnosed with pre-diabetes because I had cysts on my ovaries.

Thanks a lot for taking the time to read and advise me. :)

Hi
If you test your blood before eating make a note of result, then re test 2 hours after the first test, if your bloods are under 8 then its nothing to worry about, if they are over 10 then you may have Type 2, there's not much point in testing within the 2 hour window:)

Hi there, thank you so much for the reply. What does it mean if your blood is high within the first 20 mins? Or does that happen to everyone, not just diabetics? Thanks again.

Hi
Everyone's surgar level rises when they eat or drink, if your friend for instance has no 'diabetic problem' did a test before she ate and her result was say..5.1 then as soon as she's eaten and waited 15 minutes then tested her result would probably be up to 15, as long as you allow the 2 hour window then re test, your friend should be back to normal but like I say anything 10 or above should be checked.
I was diagnosed with type 2 around 14 months ago, my blood sugars were around 11 after the 2 hour window so I was given diet/ exercise advice, because my diabetes progressed med were given to me, but for some strange reason that I hope my Diabetic Appointment next week will reveal, my pre meal results are around 25 and after my meal and meds, and 2 hour window they haven't dropped at all, if anything they go into the 30s! It's a tricky condition, so do keep an eye on your bloods and ask your GP to check your Glucose levels and ask about your thyroid being checked because its not right you are so exhausted. :)

Hi Pink Blossom, Thanks again for your reply. That is a relief to know, thanks for posting it.

The odd part is, whenever I eat sugar, I am knocked out for at least a day or two and feel so fatigued for several days. Also, potatoes and fries knock me out sleepy for over 24 hours. I tested my thyroid so many times. Also, this just started happening lately and certain foods. I do not really eat fruits and veggies. I usually get stomach pain (indigestion) when I eat veggies and some fruits. I tried having some wheat grass today to help my blood sugar levels and my stomach hurt so bad.

Fatigue has many causes, so without Drs tests and investigations you won't know for sure.

Follow the advice for testing bg's as has been given here.

Keep at your dr for answers, don't allow them to fob you off with glib answers. Something is causing the fatigue.

Hope you get some answers soon.

Is this a recent thing? I also wondr if weight nis an issue? Hope that doesn't appear rude, I'm just thinking that often PCOS and weight are linked and your diet sounds pretty restricted if you don't eat fruit and vegetables - very carby food can make anyone tired! What kind of things do you eat for meals? If you are pre-diabetic, it would certainly make sense to cut down on your carbs as much as possible.

Hi Sharon, Thank you for your advice.

I do/did have fatigue but I've started drinking AVC 3 x a day and eating raw ginger 3 x a day and my fatigue disappeared. However, this was not fatigue. After eating the meal with crispy chicken and potatoes, it was more of a severe sleepy stage. It's now a few days later and I'm still feeling sleepy. It was more like, I need to sleep and can't open my eyes. Very odd.

Hi, yes the sleepy thing after eating potatoes is a recent thing. I'm 5'6 - 5'7 and weigh 175lbs. I'm trying to drop down to 145-150. I do have a hard time losing weight. My metabolism is just really slow. It has been the same way for most of my life. I do not eat unhealthy foods. I don't eat junk food, chips or chocolate or any sweets. I do eat a lot of carbs because of my European diet, we just naturally grew up eating a lot of carbs. My breakfast is usually a whole grain bagel with cream cheese and black tea (no sugar). Lunch/Dinner is usually rice and some BBQ meat and BBQ roasted tomatoes/onions. Or meat curry and rice. However, last week we had a lot of italian pizza with extra mozzarella cheese :|. I've started drinking AVC 3x a day and eating 1 inch of raw ginger 3 x a day.

I'm trying to add some fruits and vegetables in my diet. Some fruits/veggies burn my stomach so bad. :(

I also suddenly get shaky and weak (Hypoglemia symptoms) but when I test my blood it is in the normal range. This just started happening lately.

We get probably 5 people a week who join this forum and ask if they have diabetes. Oddly enough, 4 out of those 5 seem to suffer from the symptoms of both hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia. Those same 4 also seem to never have (verifiably) unusual blood glucose levels.

The chances of someone with diabetes having hypoglycemia are extremely low unless they're on insulin, sulfonylureas, or some other medication that increases insulin in the body. By definition, diabetes is a disease caused by an insulin deficiency in the body.

If you're worried that you might have diabetes, go see a doctor and get tests. Until then, my advice is to quit scaring yourself and stop reading WebMD so much.
