Please help me understand this

Just to update everyone.

The lingering and persisting sweet taste in my mouth was traced to be a side effect of drinking "sugar free" drinks, mainly Fanta and Waitrose lemonade, I do not understand how it did not give me this symptom in the past but only now. To be sure my wife also tasted the sweet taste in my mouth and two days ago my father in law drank a can of sugar-free lemonade and all night he had the sweet taste in his mouth,

The lingering sweet smell issue is more difficult to diagnose. As my nose had been blocked I assumed it was a structural issue with my nose. The GP said he saw polyps and prescribed Fixonase drops. I used these and my nose got unblocked and now I can sleep at nights without a very dry mouth, However the sweet smell and the loss of smell persists and it comes and goes,
