Hello everyone.
I have been experiencing high morning readings. The first I noticed it was when I woke up a 9.2. I then corrected and it was fine, but the next day the same thing happened. I woke up a 9.5 and ate the same breakfast and took the same correction but then i went to a 14.7 by 2 hours after! The next day I woke up a 11.3! I corrected like normal but then went to a 15.0! Today was the most odd though because I woke up an 8.2 and corrected and changed the ratio so I took more units. I got an 8.5 2 hours after
but by 4 hours after breakfast it went to a 12.3! This never happened before and I always ate the same breakfast with the same units for my carbs. I also didn't eat any more than usual the day before. Do I need a temporary basal and if so what time do I need it, because the time that it goes high in the morning varies? It doesn't do this any other time of the day. What is happening? why the high levels in the morning?
Any advice appreciated.

It sounds as your basal needs adjusting...

Have you considered doing a fasting basal test to indentify where the problem lies, as it sounds as if your basal is out.

I know a lot of clinics aren't keen on basal fasting tests but it's the only way to find out if the a problem lies with the basal or not!

As long as you do it wisely, on a day when you aren't doing extensive exercise, so do it on a rest day ensure that you've got a good supply of test strips and hypo treatment... Do your testing and be prepaored to abort the fasting test if your BG goes too high or you become hypo...

I tend to do a fasting basal test of one of my sectors (24 hours split into 3 sectors) once a month, unless I've got a problem that I want to sort.. As you do find that over time your basal needs to change slightly and need adjusting, by testing a sector every month it means a tweak rather a major asjustment to sort out problems

maybe you are experiencing the dawn phenomena. Your body produces wake up juices prior to waking up and means you will/may need to increase your basal rate. Basal testing - although a PITA should confirm this.

I increase my basel to 50% from 3am. It lasts to 2 hrs after I get up at 6.30. My % per carb is also slightly more at breakfast than the rest of the day.

Hi, i agree,
I have to increase my basal between 9-11am then back to normal until just after lunch and then I have to put the basal back up again in the afternoon. This is of course until my routine changes around work and they we have to re-adjust all over again.
Sorry to say it but try and have a mini play with your basals (nothing too drastic at first) The only other suggestion I could make is - are you bolus ratio's spot on? If i'm a little out with my carb counting that can sometimes make me a little higher or lower
Good luck :)

thanks everyone :)
i changed the basal from 6-12 in the morning and that has worked great since posting this :)
