I have been boarderline diabetic for 3 years . I have just had another non fasting blood test which has come back at 5 . 3 (last one was 9.8) but it showed liver count as high. NEW doctor has said you are not boarder line which is great but cannot tell me why the difference in blood count in a few months. I had my eyes tested and was asked by opticion if i was diabetic also dentist asked? Fasting test 3 months ago was 6 .9. What I am asking is has anyone else had this happen. Sorry if you cannot understand what I am asking as not very good at putting it into words Can liver funtion affect blood sugar. Thank you

I'm afraid I can't comment on liver function and blood sugar as I'm not an expert. If you want to be clearer on whether you are still borderline diabetic I would get hold of a test meter if you haven't got one and test 2 hours after a meal and do this over several days. If your test results are noticeably above 6.5'ish then you may want talk to your GP again to possibly get an HbA1C test done. I'm not a great fan of fasting tests as they can be prone to the liver doing a glucose dump etc and confusing the results. You can normally persuade a meter manufacturer to provide a meter free if you call them and you can get test strips over the web

you can also buy a blood test meter at the chemists. They usually have a few test strips included with them, so you could use that to try them out and see what you think.

Usually only if you have been instructed by a medical professional to test your blood sugar at least daily.

I do not think that HbA1C should be used for diagnosis.

Thank you all for your replys. I will be looking into buying a meter. The doctor said you are only diabetic if you are thirsty all the time and are loosing weight ? ? also said see what liver scan said. I cannot seem to get answers from her like the last doctor who unfortunatly is very ill with cancer.

Hi Angelyn!

In my opinion, the only really reliable way of getting a diagnosis for diabetes is with a Glucose Tolerance Test (GTT). Basically, you have a fasting blood test and then drink a measured amount of glucose. You wait in the doctor's for two hours and then have another blood test. If your BG has gone back almost to its pre-glucose levels you are not diabetic - if it's 11 or over you are diabetic. If its between 7 and 11 you are borderline. This test is the only one I know of that measures your body's ability to metabolise sugar. Fasting tests just measure a point in time as do random blood tests. HbA1cs measure how much glucose is bound to your red blood cells which gives a sort of average over 2 or 3 months. The trouble is, all these tests are affected by other things. The GTT measures against the baseline of the first blood test and directly measures the result of sugar consumption. I don't know why doctors don't use this test more often - I guess it must be expensive. Anyway, ask your dotor for a Glucose Tolerance Test.
