Hi,
Please could somebody with more understanding help me understand where i'm going wrong.

So my wife bought me a safe accu glucose monitoring system and some just fitter ketone test strips.

When I first tested 4 days ago my blood glucose was 14.8mmol but my ketone in urine was negative.

Over the last 4 days I've stopped consuming sugar and reduced my carb intake. My avg blodd glucose is 7.4mmol but my ketone in urine has risen to 1.5mmol.

Why is this and what can I do to lower the ketone in my urine again ?

Thanks

It’s actually good

The blood sugars have dropped because you aren’t eating as many carbs that make it rise in the first place

The ketones are as a result of burning fat instead of glucose and actually what people going low carb or keto seek to show them they are becoming fat adapted. It’s very different to ketoacidosis. (That typically happens more with type 1’s or those taking insulin and some specific medications.).

By the way on a day to Day basis highs and lows can be more useful than averages. Lots of spikes and drops have the same average as a nice smooth line which is definitely preferable.

Sounds like you have cut your carbs enough to get into ketosis.
Well done!
You should start to see even lower blood sugars over time and should get down to "normal" levels soon.

OMG, so you mean this is good news.............. crikey, I was terrified ha ha.

So will my ketone level in the urine slowly go back to negative then.

And thank you for helping ha ha

Have a read here .https://www.dietdoctor.com/low-carb/ketosis

It might answer some questions. Btw you will often hear 20g of carb mentioned for keto. Personally I am in keto at 40-50g. 20g is a guaranteed level. Many people hit ketosis higher though. You may be one of them. Do you know how many you are eating? Apps like car manager or my fitness pal as well as many others can help keep track if you want to.

Glad you breathe easier now.

Apparently most people’s do after a while as they use the ketones more efficiently. Mine for some reason are still showing 4 months later but I’m not sure why.

Your pee strips may well start to show lower levels of ketones as your body becomes more efficient in using them for fuel. This doesn't mean you aren't in ketosis but that your ketones are being used up and not peed out.
This is of course reliant on you being pre diabetic/Type 2. Did you have an HbA1c test from your GP? Do you know the results?

I only really started counting my carbs yesterday, I consumed approx 130 yesterday and if all goes to plan it will be about 100 today.
In fairness, I've never really understood the values of food. My previous diet before Wednesday I was probably consuming over a 20000 carbs a day with no problem at all.

Hi,
Thank you once again for your response.
I haven't yet had a Hba1c test, i'm at the doctors on Wednesday.

I had blurry vision and wasn't feeling to great. My wife suggested it sounded like blood sugar and bought the kits. Like I said, my first reading was 14.8. This meant nothing to me but my wife nearly spat her coffee out, so I knew it wasn't good news ha ha.

Stick with the Mrs, she is clearly on message.
Keep up the good work and report back in.
Good luck

Keymandave, I saw your other post in which you said you have NOT so much as seen a Doctor about your high blood glucose let along been diagnosed. Please make sure you tell people this when you are posting because your profile makes it sounds as if you have already been diagnosed as pre diabetic. If that was the case these comments about ketones & high levels and low carb diets would be fine but these symptoms could be indicative of type 1.

His missus is not a Doctor and, according to his other post he is not yet diagnosed as anything and is waiting to see a Doctor. What if he is type 1 but does not yet know, ketones would not be fine then.

Sorry if my profile seems misleading. I thought pre diabetes was before actually being diagnosed with diabetes but clearly having high readings.
I've not tried to mislead anybody, just be honest with my findings , fears and misunderstandings. I appreciate the time that people have invested in replying to me so far.

I will find out 100 % on Wednesday when I see the doctor.

It’s all very confusing, isn’t it? Good luck at the doctors, I hope a diagnosis and advice help

Hi @keymandave ,

Welcome to the forum.
A few random tests showing higher than normal on a gifted meter maybe an indication something "is up."

Get thee to a doctor for reliable lab tests... One gets a "pre diabetes" diagnosis officially... Or in my case back in the summer of 76. T1.
If my wife had bought me a health product? I would take the "hint" & see a doc.. They do it cuz they care..
Wishing you the best of luck!

and yet.....

would suggest something was amiss... and she was ahead of him.
As @Jaylee posted.... next stop the GP

Hank,
A nudge is as good as a wink from a partner or wife..

@keymandave , we can't diagnose you here. But there is plenty of relative experience on hand once you know what you are personally dealing with from a qualified HCP.

Hope this helps regarding sorting things out...

and yet.....people are talking to him about ketones being a good thing and low carb etc because they did not know he was completely undiagnosed at this point, his wife clearly did recognise something was amiss but would she have known about the risk of type 1 (if he is) and ketones and DKA? It's all very well the Doctor being the next step but DKA can come on within hours and can be life threatening, which is why I commented and suggested he go to the Drs soonest. Exercising when it is high may not be doing him any favours right now IF he is type 1. I was told that high readings/ketones could be dangerous if it is type 1 causing them.

Hi key, pre diabetes basically means a diagnosis that shows (by tests) that you have readings that are higher than normal (ie impaired blood glucose if you like) but not quite full diabetes yet. It still needs to be diagnosed though and hopefully your Dr will do all the tests and hopefully determine your 'type' at which point you can decide on the best approach. x

Hi,
Thank you once again for the help and advice last weekend. To be honest I think I was feeling so terrible due to lowering my carbs and cutting out sugar.

I have today had confirmation that I am pre-diabetic ( at risk ) my A1C reading was 6.4 apparently 6.5 is considered diabetic.

However. since my scare 2 weeks ago I have as a few of you know stopped sugar and started a low carb diet. It is led by diet doctor online. I highly recommend this as it has been brilliant for me.
I felt awful for the first week but now feel awesome.
I have also been using an app called one drop, when you fill the info out it basically gives you a health report.
My readings have dropped considerably, my high blood pressure is dropping , so hopefully I can reverse this using diet doctor and being good.

That's the plan anyway ha ha
