I am newly diagnosed type 2, and need to lose 6stone !!! I thought to control my Bg i needed to eat carbs such as bread, potatoes, rice, etc. But reading on this forum I have seen a lot of low carb or no carb dieting, can somebody please tell me where I can find Info on thjis. I have previously done a no carb diet and lost weight, is this a safe way for me to diet. Are there any books I can get which tell me what foods contain carbs and how much. I am at the moment very very confused and not feeling at all well. did tell the Dr. that I didnt want to do blood sugar testing do you think this was a mistake, does testing make it easier to keep track of everything. Any help or advise will be so gratfully received.

Since you have done a low carb diet before, you already know all you need to. There's no dietary necessity for carbohydrates.
Even Atkins induction is Ok and safe. I've searched for any actual evidence of harm from low carb diets and i accan't find anything which will stand up to scrutiny.
In my own case, the weight loss has pretty much stopped, but I haven't regained and I'm very fit and well, if still a couple of stones overweight.

Hi lilacfairy,

I'm afraid carbohydrates don't control your blood sugar, they only raise it.
Take a look at a couple of threads on the forum - Success Stories and Low Carb, a Newbies Guide.
That will give you a better understanding of what is meant by carb restriction and its effects on your health.
As for blood glucose testing, it's an absolute must!

All the best,

First off,on one here advocates a NO carb diet!!Some of the very experienced low carbers do eat very little carbs but it is not something recommended for very new diabetics until they know what they are doing.
Cut down or out the portions of Bread ,potatoes ,pasta and rice and any flour based products.Take it easy though ,this is not a race and you need to be comfortable with what you are eating.Get yourself a copy of Collins Gem carb counter book,it's fairly cheap, and see what sort of carb content is in the foods which you regularly eat.
The most important thing though is to be able to test your blood sugars to see what sort of impact the foods that you eat make on your blood sugars. For this you need a blood testing kit.You can try and see if your nurse/doctor will prescribe this. Some are reluctant to do this but without one you cannot gain good control.
Eat plenty vegetables and cook as much from scratch as possible so that you know exactly what goes into it.

Hi lilacfairy.
You need to surf the Diabetes Food Forum and the Low Carb Forum on here. If you need more answers, just ask.
BTW, low carb does not have to mean Atkins, I combine low carb, low fat, low GI, low salt and low sugar very successfully. You need to work out what is good for YOU. A reduction in carbs can only be a good thing for most Diabetics.

Thank you all so much for your help I am reading as much as I can and have also asked Dr. for testing equip which he was very happy to give me. I have decided on a low carb diet and will get a collins gem carb counter (thanks for that). I am feeling better today. had more energy so did lots of housework now my back (arthritis and damaged discs) is agony so will have to watch that.
