Try not to worry, I'm type 2 so not much help to you, but just stopping by to say hello as we are both awake!. If you search the forum there are some threads that might be helpful for you, search using 'type 1 pregnant' should do it. I'm sure your medical team will be happy for you, and happy to advise.

First, congratulations!
My experience is out of date, but I became pregnant six weeks after my Type 1 diagnosis 30 years ago. My baby is approaching his 30th birthday, next week.
I remember that, at the time, I felt panicky about pregnancy/diabetes, but my consultant (almost laughed at me) reassured me that there would be no problem at all, and there wasn't. It was great.
Funny thing was that I was at diabetes clinic when my waters broke, and I was not allowed to go home, but was admitted directly to labour ward. This was a bit of a problem because it was my daughter's third birthday and she was at home with my parents. (I even asked the doctors if I could go home on the bus and come back later. They laughed and said no.) Luckily she'd had her birthday cake and candles at breakfast time, before I set off for clinic, and my parents hosted her party in the afternoon. Upshot was my son and daughter share the same birthday three years apart.
I had good care from the diabetes clinic throughout my pregnancy, but I bet the care has moved on and become even better! I hope someone comes along quickly with info on what it's like now.

Firstly congratulations! It all might seem daunting right now but it will be worth it in the end.

The pregnancy toolkit mentioned above is brilliant, and talks through each stage and what to expect in good detail. I think the most important thing is to test frequently and be prepared to make changes as needed - have you done a DAFNE course or similar to enable you to do this yourself? If not then stay close to your diabetes team to help you manage the changes.

I'm only a few weeks ahead of you but already I've found this forum to be wonderfully helpful and supportive!

Hello and welcome,congratulations understandably it can be an anxious time, with all sorts of things running through your head. Just to let you know I was 42 1/2 yrs when I had my now teenager and she has grown into a healthy and a happy teenager.

First of all, try not to worry. Pregnancy with diabetes is hard work - lots of btesting and adjusting insulin - but it's fine, and lots and lots of ladies just like you manage ok and have a healthy baby

Are you taking a high dose of folic acid? This is very important if you have diabetes. If you're not, don't panic just speak to your DSN or GO and get some prescribed (you can't get thenhigh dose in the shops).

I also advise you to give your DSN a call anyway so they're aware of your pregnancy and can get you seen at a clinic. You'll probably have more appointments and more scans, but that's good because it just means you get extra care

Hi @Kjh2015. I am also type 1, though I've had it for over 25 years now. I'm five weeks pregnant, also. Very excited but a bit scared, too!

Let your doctor know ASAP that you're pregnant. Mine has booked me an appointment with a midwife for mid January, when I'll be around nine weeks. The midwife is tied to the GP surgery. She also said, though, that I'd been assigned a specialist team to handle the diabetes side, and all the potential risk factors that can bring. She stressed the world potential and assured me that I will have a normal pregnancy as long as I look after myself. Being type 1 means that we will be classified as a high risk pregnancy. This will mean extra checks but I see that as a good thing!

I last had my hba1c checked in September but had another blood test last week when I saw my GP. Just to make sure everything is ok.

Try your best to keep your blood sugars in the tArget range. This might mean extra tests but it's worth it to avoid any issues.

Hi. Congratulations on the pregnancy!!

As Azure said you need to ask for folic acid 5mg from your GP and start taking this ASAP.

I'm now 26 weekish and have found regular testing to be the most important thing. I test 1&2 hr after meals and usually in the middle of the night when I wake to go to the toilet.

Working closely with your DSN & diabetes consultant is important & don't be afraid to ask for help if you're finding things tricky.

I've found my sugar levels have changed quite a bit during during pregnancy and I've had to increase my basal rates, but again the consultant & DSN can help with this.
