I have been following a thread on a pre diabetes Facebook page. The post was about fasting levels and whether or not it should be under 90 ( 5.0) And others smugly saying that they like to see their Fasting levels between 80-90 (4.4 -5.0) Well, yes I would love to see that too but low carbing and exercise doesn't get mine below 99. Feeling a bit rubbish to tell the truth.

5.5 is probably the lowest I go although it was 5.1 the other day. I generally sit between 5.7 and 6.4. Just felt a bit rubbish as everyone was saying over 100 was too high. I think I am going to leave the group as They are making me feel like I'm failing. I posted the recommended Diabetes.co.uk advice on normal blood sugars and said that they were too high!

Well, I would like to see my fasting levels in the 3s and 4s, but it ain't ever gonna happen.

Low carbing and exercise don't get mine below 6-7 most of the time, and they can (usually with stress) easily go over 8. I think the highest reading so far this year was 12ish. After a very stressful/disturbed night when I was outside at 3am waving an umbrella at a fox that was trying to kill a cat in my garden. That was a fun experience!

You are pre-diabetic, aren't you?

The thing about FBG is that while we can use drugs and dietary control, and exercise and prayer to our heart's content, we can't actually control it (although some type 1s on insulin seem to do a good job), and our body decides what it wants to do. Things like work and family stress, sleeplessness, job interviews, impending holidays, and so on all have an effect - for some of us. Other people have different reactions (blood pressure, for instance).

So I wouldn't worry about it unless it goes regularly into the diabetic range, in which case pop along to the doc and get yourself tested there.

One of the best things to learn is to only compare yourself with yourself. Because we are all different, and the way this pre D and Ds 1 and 2 affects us will vary hugely.

Thanks Brunneria, you are right. I have not had a 4 reading at any time of the day since July! Yes, I am pre diabetic, my meter says I am averaging 6.4 which equates to an Hba1c of 38 so fingers crossed it will OK. I feel fit, Losing weight nicely and eat well. I think there seems to be a culture on there of unrealistic blood sugar levels just like others have unrealistic weight goals

I hate to see others that are driven by BG readings.
Personally, I am where I am, if I give my life over to chasing numbers down to a completely unrealistic level, (even for non diabetics), I think that's worse than any diabetic complication that may, (or may not) happen eventually.

And for me, 4 is too low to be comfortable, and beyond the bottom of normal.

You've hit on one of the reasons I never read threads where people are posting their BG levels - seems like an exercise in self-congratulation or self-flagellation to me. I'm either going to feel smug 'cos mine are lower or miserable 'cos they're higher - either way, it's not doing anything to control my BG. JMHO.

@Donnadoobie - there's not point in worrying over other people's levels - they don't have your diabetes so you just need to so the best you can to manage yours It's not some sort of "I can go lower than you" competition, it's an ongoing exercise at doing the best you can to help your body keep within reasonable and safe levels.

Like Brunneria, I might fancy having lower levels, but pigs mught fly, and my body prefers for the most to settle for a steady 6-7 range, and my glucose levels tend to start "oscillating" if I try to force them down more. So, I try to keep things as level as I can with a low carb diet, and am happier with my slightly higher flattish levels than lower high spikey ones.

@Donnadoobie they sound like a bunch of pompous *****. Dont let it get to you your doing great. Individual BS can vary from day to day, especially fasting BS. My A1c is now in the normal range but my fasting BS is usually in the 7's, go figure. Stick with us and stay positive :D

I agree with all of the others Donna, every case of diabetes is different. I was prediabetic but I was diagnosed Type 2 a couple of weeks ago and I find the more stressed I get about my levels the more they go up! My son has Aspergers Syndrome (a type of autism) and he hit the nail right on the head when he says conformity is greatly overrated - you do what's right for you
