Hi everyone

My stepson was diagnosed with Type 1 in January 2008 at 3yrs and 4mnths.

My own son (his half brother) is now 3yrs and 3mnths and has been poorly for quite some time. I check his bloods occasionally and they have been fine. Tonight I checked him....as he's been really bad for the last few days....4 hours after eating dinner and sound asleep in bed his reading was 7.5.

Now i know compared to a diabetic that is quite good but is obviously on the higher side of "normal" at that time.

I am probably being paranoid and neurotic....

I just want to make my little boy better....if he is getting Type 1 then I will deal with it....just the not knowing that is doing this???

:-(

awwe bless you!

BG's can rise through sickness even in people without diabetes.

As you have a step-son with diabetes i'm sure you will be able to spot signs of diabetes and know how to act wisely if any do occur.

Don't worry too much, see a Dr or ring nhs helpline if you are extremely worried.

I don't have children but i have a little sister so i understand your worry!

You're definately not neurotic just a typical mum i'd say :)

I've seen higher results than that in non diabetics so it might be nothing. Obviously if you're worried you should go to a GP. Try not to worry though. My stepmother used to threaten to do blood tests on my little brother every time he wanted a drink. I could never work out if she was actually worried or if it was another of her weird mind games! So please try not to get paranoid about it, as it can cause problems!

Hope your son feels better soon :-)

Thank you....

Done them again this morning, so a fasting result and is 14.7, so think I'm gonna get him in the doctors today, don't think a non diabetic should have a result that high do you?

:(

I first went to the doctors with a BG reading of 29, and they asked me all sorts of questions and did tests before they diagnosed me. so that says to me there can be many different reasons for very high sugar.

Definately take him to the doctors as soon as you can.

I'm sure whatever the outcome he will be fine as you already know about diabetes and sound like a very caring mother :)

Thanks Ebony that means quite alot at the moment, am monitoring him throughout today, I guess 2mro's morning reading will be quite significant.

Thanks Jen&Khaleb....

Didnt go to the doctors today as requested by my other half....he thinks im being paranoid and everyone gets these kinds of readings from time to time.

Just for the record....todays readings have been all over the place varying from 5.8 to 16.8. Im not sure if this is the beginning and a "honeymoon" period is in place or if i really am just being paranoid.

My doctors are pretty useless and my other half thinks i should record his readings for a week and then go in with some conclusive evidence, i think he just really wants this not to be happening to another of his children, which i totally understand!

Thanks for listening everyone, I am completely out of my mind, just want to know if he is or he isnt', anyone read tealeaves on here???

i can see why your other half wouldn't want you to go as it must be a scary thing!

but you must do what's best for your child. 'evidence' or not you have enough readings to warrant testing to get to the bottom of it all.

it very well could be honey moon period the pancreas kicking in and lowering he BG's but struggling hence the higher readings..

I would definately take him, then you can finally know if you are being paranoid.

And if it isn't diabetes then if it is something else then that needs to be treated too!

Have you tried calling your local diabetes centre.. if you have one in your area.. for some good advice.. i know from experience my diabetes team are more than willing to kick my GP up the bum to get something done!

I hope you get to the bottom of it all soon! the sooner you find out the sooner your worries can ease

all the best x

With those readings I would definitely get your son to a doctor for further advice. Readings in the 14s and 16s is not normal and needs to be looked into further. Please do what is best for your son and his health.

hmmm..

How very strange, does he seem perfectly well and like a usaual bouncy child?

Continue to monitor him and anymore high readings take him to the doc's..

Don't be sad that you may have been wrong, you we're perfectly right in being concerned!

No he's by no means perfectly healthy bouncy child....he's had lots of blood tests recently because he has bad exzema, bloated belly, tired ALL the time (perfect child asks to go to bed by 6pm-wakes at 7-8am!!), he goes to toilet alot, both bits, drinks alot, very very pastey and he's just generally not right most of the time.

So...as his mum...I know there is something, and I've been suspecting diabetes will come for a long time....just need to find a decent doctor to do something. My docs called me up the surgery 4 times last month, only to give me "oh he's fine, he's negative, his bloods are normal!!"

Thanks for listening to me drone on and on, am so worried about my little man, just wanna make him well, just want someone to tell me whats up, even if its something like an allergy or intolerance.

thanks

I think I agree that non diabetic could have a random high reading. But fasting at 14mmol sounds high to me. I check your post daily awaiting the results of the doctor! I think, if he had an HbA1c test, it would show whether or not he has elivated glucose wouldn't it? A a normal testing kit is giving you highs and normal readings at specific times. HbA1c would show if it's consistent. I'd make sure his hands are washed and it's a new needle, check over a few days and write down times and food and take your piece of paper to the docs and demand a test (if u think the results are high) I'm worried about your little one with those numbers.

Thank you for your support, it really means alot.

Have changed my doctors and have an appointment tomorrow...YAY

I have also insisted on a Paediatric appointment which isn't until 19th July, because there is definately something not right. Bless him...he asked to go to bed at 4.30 this afternoon with his big bloated belly and didn't want his dinner...so that's where he is.

He has even wet the bed the last 2 nights and he's been dry for over a year...tho his readings have been between 6 and 8 so cant see it being his bg making him pee.

Just out of interest....weird question....how often does a 3yr old go to the toilet. Is 14 times excessive or perfectly normal, obviously as his bg is ok this can't be affecting him.

Thanks again, is so nice to be able to chat without being called neurotic!!

xx

weeing 14 times a day seems excessive to me. My 3 yr old who is T1 only goes about 6 times a day average. I must say he seems to have a fairly large bladder. You probably need to look at the quantity coming out.

glad you have an appointment tomorrow. i hope you get to the bottom of things or at least get the ball rolling!

sounds like there is something there as he has alot of different symptoms.

poor little fella!

let us know how it goes! :)
